Cyclone ML (wtf were they thinking)

i'll resist the urge to just go ranting at my dismay, but i'll keep this focused.

we all know that the Assault Cannon is one of the best weapons in the SM armoury (and probably one of the best in the game), but what of the Cyclone ML.

the CML allows you to fire a missle & and doesn't require the loss of the storm bolter, which in itself isn't that bad.

    however, the fact that:
    a) the AC is *better* (much better) and popping armor
    b) the AC is infinatrly better at taking out all types of infantry
    c) the AC actually costs LESS than the CML

the only real advantages that the CML has:
    a) longer range (but termis usually DS close anyways)
    b) can kill a monolith (but if you're relying on MLs...)
    c) fire Stormbolter (woohoo)

yes, i realize this is a rather mute point and i should be sending a letter to GW instead, but i just wanna see if i'm the only one who's saddened by this.

as for a fix, it'd be simple:

    a) lower price of CML to 15pts
    b) make it twinlinked

The problem isn't that the CML got worse. It's that the assault cannon got so much better.

Agreed. The playtesters or whoever probably didn't realise how powerful the new AC was. On anotehr note, anyone know if DH gets to use the new assault cannon, or use the crap version?

The Cyclone actually has gotten alot worse. When I first started playing you had to keep track of the missiles in it (12 total) and could fire as many as you wanted up to the limit during the shooting phase. You got 1/2" of blast template every rocket you shot if you fired more than one, so you ended up having a 6" across krak missile strength blast marker if you fired the entire stock in one go. Needless to say thats a bit stronger than what we have today, but that was also when you could save terminators with a 3+ on 2d6. The assault cannon has gotten various upgrades during that same time frame.

Im rather miffed at terminators in general as they've gradually weakened over the years; if I use them at all its a good indication that hell froze over.

Well in the last version of the game, Cyclones were better then assault cannons at taking on armour. GW simply carried over the CML into this edition because many players had CML terminators. This is just like scouts with shotguns, GW had models for them so carried them over to this edition. But with this edition they also significantly made the AC better. So really if you dont like the CML then dont use it.

In the intrest of fairness GW did update the CML slightly. You no longer lose the power fist. So what you have now is a long range mobil H/W squad that is capable of move/shoot and still assault. I however do agree that overall the AC is much preferable to the CML.

*nods* I loved the old 2nd Ed rules for things like the CML and the Whirly, where you could fire Salvos XD

I'd be all like "WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH! MUHAHA! BOOM BOOM BOOM!"

But once you lost all your rockets, that was it. Tough titties.

In all honesty, I don't use Termies enough to even use CML's But then I tend to lean to anti-troop anyway, so Assault Cannons or Flamers would always be my choice.

Every army that uses a weapon called an "assault cannon" uses the updated rules. This also works for items such as Bionics, Terminator Armor, Space marine Bikes, Narthecium (IG versions also because they are Nartheciums) and anything else that is the same item but reprinted across multiple codexs

And yeah Im not sure why GW made the assault cannon so incredibly good.. I mean why bother taking other weapons heh. Or heck why doesnt the imperium make a new predator variant called "Predator Absurdium".. Twin linked assault cannon, 2 assault cannon sponsons and a pintle mounted assault cannon

Land Raider wtfzor - 2 Twin linked assault cannons, 1 turret mounted TL assault cannon
Vindicator "wtbmoreasscannons" - Instead of firing a demolisher instead it fires a TON of assault cannons at people .. Ordinance 1. Roll to scatter as per normal and unit under the template takes D6 wounds. If you roll a 6 then the unit takes 6 wounds ignoring armor saves

Dreadnought "L33t" pattern - Instead of placing a dying space marine hero inside they put an assault cannon in its chest and it has 2 more for its arms giving it 3 assaults cannons. They fired an assault cannon was much more useful than a silly marine
