A newbie question about guess weapons

As you can guess from the title, I am new at WH40K and I have a question. I played my first game of 40K the other day and took a Whirlwind (I borrowed an army to try 40K with). When I used the Whirlwind my more experienced opponent said that I must guess the range with the weapon and then roll scatter dice from the point that I guessed to. I thought that this sounded wierd but bowed to the wisdom of the more experienced player. However, when I looked up the rules for guess weapons later I could not find any reference to guessing range in the fourth edition rules. I am assuming that my opponent confused the third and fourth edition rules, but I am not sure of it. If somone could tell me how to use guess weapons properly I would appreciate it.

he was exactly correct and the rules for guess weapons can be found on page 31 under barrage weapons

Actualy he was completely incorrect. There is no longer a Guess for range, the template for a Whirlwind (or any other barrage weapon) is simply placed and then scattered 1 or 2d6 according to LoS.

The range has a G next to it, implying Guess.

Although it says guess you actually no longer have to. Just place it over roll one D6 if you have LOS and 2D6 and pick the highest if you dont.

Guess = Barrage, as the newer rulebook overides that rule that could be found in the codexes.
