i was just wondering, is an assault squad really worth its points, i collect Dark Angels and i have a 10 man assault squad with vet serg. that i rarely use because of their lacking ability to kill things and make up for their very expensive point cost. I usually use a 10 man scout squad with BP and CCW instead of an assault squad, as it is cheaper and more effective. If u disagree with me, can u provide advice on how to make them effective in battle. Thanks.

right sorri..... well i still want to ask if it is wise to put 10 of them into a 1500pt army??
nah..i would say they are crap for an army
if they are used, they should be supported by other powerful cc troops like terminators as they are really crap on their own
Assault Squads Crap? Hardly... While maybe not the close combat monsters some armies have acsess to, Sm Assault Squads are highly effective, you just have to learn how to use them right. From my experience, most people don't. While I agree that you shouldn't let them charge headlong into the enemy without support, that support doesn't have to be more assault troops.
Sure they're expensive, but they are a extremly quick, well armored assault force. Terminator Assault squads are more expensive and vastly overrated.
I always buy my squads in a unit of 10, unless I have some specific Mission for them.
See my other post in this forum, the Topic is almost exatly the same... I explain the finer points of SM Assault warfare...
I never leave home without my Assault Squad. They have won the day for me on many occassions. Learn to use them and you'll find out that they are definatly worth the extra points!

no when i mean by 'lacking support' is that most space marine troops are shooty based than cc which shows by ratio for example like a army of tyranids 80%CC
and 20% shooty the space marines are 20% cc and 80% shooty so imo i would take more shooty tactical marines than a bunch os assult because u are likely to be slaughtered
i seen this in WD 28(something) where dark angels assult squad is massacred by superior assult armies (or bloodletters in this case..ouch)
but it also shows dark angels wiping out a black legion squad, which shows they are good against lightly assult troops
o and by the way armour means nothing to a bunch of mad power-sword wielding daemons..
but they look cool
i really only use mine in 2500+ points

I agree with the sentiment that assault marines arent necessarily the best thing to use against enemy assault troops.
My belief has always been that it's better to try and cut down your enemy's close-combat specialists with ranged attacks, and use assault marines to exploit those enemy troops which are less skilled in CC (like regular CSMs, for instance).

It is a really smart thing to take two squads of 5 men with a force commander in it.
