hi im about to start ig. and i want to know how to equip my hq. i will be playing small games 500- 750 so how do i equip him and his retinue???? i want him to be used for ld and maybe hth. thanks in advance
Junior Officer w/ Iron Displine
Veteran Guardsman w/ Standard
Mortar squad (optional... if you like em )
this is a great cost/effective unit. it'll only run you 66pts and will give you Rerollable Ld8, w/ Iron Disp (which is just awsome) and will be able to fire even when out of LOS (which should be quit often).
for 25 more points you could slap an Honorific Imperialis on the JO, but that's getting pricey for a 500-750 pt game.
i'd stick with a plain ol' JO and spend that 25 points on heavy weapons.
I agree with BoxANT entirely on this point. That's the perfect way to equip an HQ squad at such a small points limit. You really just want him for LD only. Trust me. A good indication of how well the game is going for you is whether your HQ is stuck in HtH combat. If they ARE in HtH combat, then you are probably losing the game, if they AREN'T, then you are probably still doing a fine job.i want him to be used for ld and maybe hth.
Everything said above looks good.
Maybe the Mortar isn't the best though. A heavy Bolter works wonders, as would a medic and Plasma gunner. Also if you want to use the JU for his leader ship put a Master Vox in the squad so he can relay his high Ld to the rest of the army.
H0urG1ass is right, IG are not made for CC and you DON'T want your Commander to be there. Try equiping him with a storm bolter, it's a cheap weapon and gets the job done at a distance.
since its gona be a small games you dont want to tool ur hq to much.
Give your HSO cc weapon, bolt gun and carapace armour
You dont want to use a standard in these games as there quite costly so forget them. Instead take a nromal vox man & equip him with a cc weapon and las pistol.
Make 2 people a hw crew, probaly a heavy bolter or auto cannon
And make the last guy with a melta gun as 500- 750pts games are very close so that would be more ideal
Hope i've helped l8er

The Mortar is worth it to keep out of LOS, the HB will put you in range of a smart player!

Mortar does very little damage. And if your going to give your HQ a heavy weapon it may as well be worth it. The heavy Bolter or Autocannon will blast most foes away, and they won't scatter. They also have higher stats then the Mortar, which will come in handy when LOS doesn't matter anymore. Depending on who you face most often it is quite likely that you will eventually need a heavy weapon that can defend your HQ even at short ranges, something Mortar isn't capable of. Also, if your worried about your HQ getting into CC keep an extra squad nearby to defend it, and abosorb any incoming Charges.
I'm not a fan of HQ units. This is part of the reason I play Armored Company-I'd rather have Improved Comms and BS4 on a Leman Russ Vanquisher then an officer and 4 lackies. That said, I could really see the value in giving the whole squad Storm Bolters and a Power Fist for the officer. That could prove to be a really nasty and discreet force.

Mech Tau Cadre: 2000 points, needs paint and magnets.
Paladins of Avalon (SW):-1500 points, needs paint.

the point is you do NOT WANT YOUR HQ IN LOS OF ANYTHING.
therefore a mortar which can fire out of LOS is better than another HW that can't fire.
in addition, i have found that is smaller point games (~500) mortars can be very useful. they're great for hitting that infiltrating StealthSuit squad, or annoying scouts.
and besides, mortars are just cool.
so i should never give the hq a powere weapon?? i was thinking its only 5 pts i play sisters and they are twice the price when i saw power weapon 5pts i wanted to use it simply cus its cheap!!!!!!. anyway so ive got a good idea on how to field my hq. but for the hw i still dont know. ill probly go auto canonn. is there a cadian model with the mortar???
