For a 1000 point game is it better to have a hull mounted heavy bolter or lascannon?
i think i would go with lascannon, but if the battle cannon blows up then i really have nothing to blow up tanks.
The heavy bolters are good because they can kill more troops (I play agaist the tau)
Please respond they both seem so good.
tau tanks have a front armor value of 13 so if you are wanting it for tank busting id go with the lascannon, how much other heavy weapony are you planing on using?
The Leman Russ has an armor value of 14 in front, not easy to destroy, even with railguns. You should have enough heavy weapons in your platoons without needing another on your Russ, and heavy bolters trash Tau, goes right through their armor. I would stick with another Heavy Bolter in the Hull instead of a lascannon.

I'd say never take the lascannon. I have used it once in battle and it hit a grand total of one time. I killed the bugger, but I'd say that the heavy bolters extra shots make it much more effective with a Guardsmans low BS. Also, the heavy bolter is cheaper, which in guard armies is good. Besides, if you want to bust tanks use the battle cannon or other heavy weapons in your army, and keep the Hull/Sponson weapons for the Infantry.
I personally take three heavy bolters on all of my Reman Russ tanks. When your battle cannon gets blown off, then you still have 9 shots at a high strength and great AP.
Also, just on a side note, I never ever take Storm Bolters or Heavy Stubbers. They cost the same amount of points as two heavy bolter sponsons and only fire two shots.
I'd personally go with the lascannon. Most enemies would destroy the battle cannon if you get a weapon destroyed. I usually fight Tau, Demon hunters, Orks, and Necrons, so lascannons really work for me. An instant kill on a Crisis suit is worth it in my opinion.
I'd take the Heavy Bolter. Sometime when you move, it is better to shoot the 3 HB than the battle cannon, Especially if it Tau or Eldar out in the open. At least you'll hit 4.5 time with 9 HB shots.
Plus, it's all about point savings. Those points could buy you a Plasma gun for a command squad, or whatever.

I'd say stick with the Heavy Bolter. The way I see it the main point of a Leman Russ is the battle cannon, I honestly don't expect to be firing much more than that so I try to keep it as ceap as I can.

I came, I saw, I got a different type of Leman Russ.

I would go with the Hev. Bolter also. Fighting Tau myself, i stick with having the battle cannon do what it does best, blow the crap outa infantry. then i guess the Hev. Bolters can do their thing if the cannon gets blown off. If Tau tanks are such a problem, leave your heavy weapon teams with lascannons to take them out.
Lascannon would be my first choice since I usually play a man who uses armor and armored troops so the heavy bolter come up short on that end. But i don't see the problem with going with both. One more weapon for the enemy to destroy.
