I'm rather new to WH40k and am starting out into Space Marines.
The commander listing on page 28 of the new codex doesn't say what weapons he gets and/or what the point cost is for various loadouts - what does he use? Do I just select anything I want off page 22 and pay the points?
My second question is looking for suggestions as to how to grow my army. I have the tactical group from Battle of Macragge. My friend will be getting the Eldar Battleforce tomorrow. I know I want a Predator and a Dreadnought, but am otherwise unsure what to put on them and what else would be good for facing Eldar.
I'm thinking my next core unit will be scouts with sniper rifles, and then a predator annihilator with heavy bolters and a pintle mounted storm bolter.
Any suggestions/critiques would be welcome. Thanks.
I can answer the first question. The commander would come equiped with a Bolt Pistol and CCW(Close Comabat Weapon). He can use up to 100 points of wargear which should be listed in the begining of the units section. Keep in mind he may only have 2 weapons, and only one of those may be 2 handed.
As for what to add to your army I don't exactly know. But my friend does have a whirlwind that has been pretty effective on my infantry thus far.
what kind of eldar. chaplains and librarians are way better than a force commander
I'm assuming basic Eldar, he'll likely be buying a codex when he buys the Battleforce tomorrow. I hadn't realized the differences between the Eldar types were that great sorry
no big. well watch out for star cannons, bright lances, howling banshees, dark reapers and striking scorpians. they are probably going to be the biggest threats. bolters and lots of bolters will be handy
for tanks whirlwind, predator, and your every day dreadnaught
Where are you getting this? Commander come with zero equipment. You have to purchase everything. I advise a power weapon, bolt pistol, and combat shield. Also, you need 2 mandatory troops choices. Basic marines will be the most rounded choice, good in any battle.Originally Posted by Gandhi
Welcome to the marines! If you have a decent pile of cash (100-200 bucks), the best deal is to buy someone's used army online. You can get tons of minis quite cheap this way. (i got about 6000pts worth for around $400 a while back). They will probably be painted, so you'll have to change the marine's you have to match, or strip all the ones you buy...

First of all seeing as your first question was answerd nicely by Gandhi.And i have a questioon to you:what chapter are you thinking of playing or are playing?That will help a bit on what to get next.Anyway id suggest you buy another Tactical Squad then get your HQ sorted out.Because for the absolute basic force you need 2 Troop choices and 1 HQ choice.I would reccomend buying a chaplain and use him as your HQ because he is hard as nail and hes strong in close combat and is fairly cheap for what you get.
As for vsing eldar take plenty of bolters as it denys there armor save because of its ap.Watch out for their Starcannons as they will hurt your HQ.
You should get some heavy and special weapons for your tactical squads, like missile launchers and plasma guns. Also, consider getting an assault squad. For the predator annihilator, don't give it a storm bolter. It is wasted points since it will only fire at vehicles and wraithlords anyway, you could almost get another marine for those points.
If your friend starts to use a lot of psychic powers a Librarian will come in handy, he has the ability to nullify enemy psychic powers. I can tell you that it is really annoying, since i play both UlthwÃ© Eldar and Dark Angels Space Marines.

Sorry to disagree with you Gandhi, but SM characters do not come with any equipment not deemed integral to their role. So Commanders have nothing, Librarians have Force Weapons, etc.
You select their weapons from the armoury at the point listed (if the points are listed x/y you use x), and you may replace any weapons the model comes with as normal (if you want for example, a Librarian without a Force Weapon). The "best" weapon combinations for Captains/Masters are Power Weapon/Pistol, Lightning Claw/Storm Bolter, and Power Weapon/Storm Bolter (less useful). The worst weapons to give them are standard CCW (as this wastes their CC potential) and Power Fists/Thunder Hammers (because this wastes their comparatively high initiative). Some do take PF/ThH for fluff reasons though.
