Several times this has gotten on my nerves, WHY IS THE HEROIC SENIOR OFFICER SO MANY POINTS!
I have seen many other leaders that are less points and have better stats, eldar have the most.
An eldar howling bannshe has the same stats, but our leader has more wounds but a worse save, unless upgraded. ( i'm not to sure on them 100%)
I know that ig are suppose to be almight shoters or cc, but why is he so many points?
The howling bannshe is a lot cheaper has a power weapon and better save.
To make ours that good we would have to pay 10points for carapace armor and a power weapon. I'll take a guess and say that the howling banneshe is 16 points? That 6 more points for there stats.
I think that HSO should be lowered in points or leaders and high stat units should be a little more points for them.
The HSO also has access to the armory, includes the cost of 4 guardsmen, and has the ability to let models around him use his leadership, and he's an HQ unit, they always cost more than other models.

Rules for grenades are on page 72 of the rulebook.
if you subtract the points of the 4 Guardsmen with him he's 46 points the leadership power being 5 points he ends up being 41 points, thats still alot for his points. A farseer being 45points has better WS<BS and a save that is invunerable. that only thing that we better him in is the attacks, but he should be using powers.
i just think that he should have better WS and BS.
Ig have no modeels with BS5, only kell, but he doesn't even have a gun.
simply put, our characters are not supposed to be good.
they're neither good in combat or good in cost/effective. they're overpriced and suck in CC. But that's the point, IG is not a character based army.
oh we have character lots of it. but we're no SMs (or even worse, CSM..)
however, you may say that the points for a HSO are overpriced for what he can do in combat (and you'd be correct). But his points for what he can do *out* of CC are why we pay for him.
in other words, KEEP HIM OUT OF CC and he'll be worth the points.
HSO + ID + STANDARD + carapace = alot of points. however, this one unit has the ability to keep a huge section of your army in the fight. and that's worth it.
If you want a good charachter in an IG army that doesn'y suck, take a special charachter like Yarrick or Gaunt. IMO, I think that yarrick is the best choice for a charachter to use. (if any)

You can't look at the cost of an HSO (or JO with Honorifica) all by themselves. You also have to consider the huge number of heavy weapons they allow you to access without taking an organization slot.
You know why nobody ever uses heavy weapons platoons? Because your command HQ is ALREADY a heavy weapons platoon, but one that can also include special weapons and sentinels.
Command HQ's by themselves are crappy and overpriced, but taking the whole picture in, I'd prefer them to just about any HQ choice in the whole game.
I agree with tomjoad. IG has the ability, and I'm only guessing here, to field 10,000 pts with out bleeding onto a second force organization chart. While you don;t see many games of that size, it allows your force to be extreamly flexible. If the command squad was priced too much lower, IG would be come unbalanced because you can effectivly field an elite (special weapon squads), a fast attack (sentinal support squad), and a heavy support choice (fire support squads). Done carefully, one command platoon can field more heavy weapons than most reasonable armies can.
A witty saying proves nothing.
If you want an awesome character in an IG army, then take Creed and Kell. They are worth every single point of their 125 points to the IG.
The ability to automatically pick where to set up is worth it's weight in gold to a mostly static, shooting army.
Not to mention, Kell is actually quite decent in CC compared to just about anything else out there. I've tossed him in with a countercharging unit of Ogryn before and he really put the hurt on some marines.

but the main reason why they're useful is not for the CC ability, that's just a bonus.
