Has anyone ever used rough riders without hunting lances, say by outfitting the squad with lasguns and plasma weapons? I have never heard of this being done but think it is an intriguing idea.
I think it would be a versatile unit to bring support to different parts of the battlefield, and the enemy may be confused into chasing them down, fearing their charge. While this is happening you just keep backing the RR away and shooting into the confused foe.
What do the Imperial Commanders think of this idea? Good or bad?
ive thought about it but I personally dont think its worth it for a few reasons:
a) guardsmen and plasmaguns dont mix well in my opnion, they just arent worth the points
b) rough riders are more expensive than regular troops cause of thier special rules(fleet), if you want to shoot you cant use fleet of hoof
c) they are really just regular guardsmen on horses so they still die like regular guardsmen, it doesnt take much effort to kill them and taking a full unit so you have 8 extra bodies to protect two plasmaguns doesnt seem worth it
d)I think a hardened vet squad would be a much better mobile support squad since base point cost is the same and they can have more special weapons, mount them in a chimera if you want that extra movement you could count on it more than fleet
so while its possible that you could pull this off well I doubt in the majority of games it would work. Id stick to just giving them hunting lances and letting them be one shot wonders cause what they do, they do well!! nothing like killing a whole squad of terminators with some guys on horseback.
the only configuration of RuffRiders w/out Lances that can work (imo) is RR w/ meltabombs.
Im all for anything out of the norm that will make my opponent think twice. If you think the rest of your army list is strong enough to stand a chance on its own, why not try something new while you're at it? I guess thats my philosophy...
My friend who I play more than anyone else also plays IG and even he has a tough time figuring out what to shoot at sometimes. If I had the models, Id bring lance-less rough riders one game just to make him think.
I guess I like playing those mind games, but if you are good, they can really start to unravel an opponent and pay off.
I am the Aquila-Guerilla!
I was thinking of converting some guys to ride xeno creatures, so if I do that I could put either the lance or the gun in a holster and choose how they are equipped for each game.Originally Posted by GuardinGnome
I like using trickery as well, that's why I normally play Bloodaxe Orks. Even if it only works once, (or for 1 turn) it's still worth it IMO. And the opponent will always remember playing you. "Hey, you're the guy with those bloody rough riders that wouldn't charge me!"
Melta bombs is also an intriguing idea, thanks boxANT...
