hey everyone, i have been thinking about playing imperial guard for ages when i finally made a bid for some stuff on ebay and won.
this is what i have got
i was wondering what to use i will eventually use it all i guess but i was hoping to get about a five to six hundred point force.
1 Leman Russ Demolisher
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank
20 Imperial guard soldiers including meltagun and plasma guadsman
1 Aramgeddon sentinel
1 rocket launcher team
2 officers with powerfists
p.s i also have a squad of storm troopers from my witch hunters army i am going to use as troops.
any advice would be great thanks .
p.s i would also like to know what to get next
thanks in advance
Your next purchase should be about 5 boxes of guardsmen! Almost...
With so few (20?) Guardsmen, the only way you will be able to field a legal army would be to take the doctrine that allows you to use Storm Troopers (elites) as regular troop choices.
The most basic legal guard army (barring anything weird like Last Chancers or the above mentioned doctrine) has a minimum of 40 guardsmen models (including 3 to 5 officer models). You could do 40 guardsmen by taking a 25 man Regular Platoon (see the threads at the top of the guard forum for a great explaination), a 5 man HQ Command Squad and a 10 man Armored Fist (AF) Squad which is mounted in a Chimera transport.
Read over the codex a few times, the force chart and unit choices can seem dizzying at first but you should pick them up pretty quickly.
Definately purchase more Guardsmen next, Im guessing you got Cadians? A couple boxes of Shock Troops will be your greatest asset early on. You have a great start with your tanks, you just need the disposable infantry that the IG is so famous for to round out your army.

thanks heaps for the advice and yeh i was using the storm troopers till i got some cash up.
in about 1000 point how many guardsman do i need, the biggest problem is the cost every squad has to have a heavy weapon (otherwise its waisted) so that is gunna cost alot.
is the demolisher good? looking at it the gun seems to short- range to be any use.
You can never have too many Guardsmen!
...And they shall fear the lasgun
I personally love the demolisher, but it should NEVER be used in open range battles. Their short range gun is very limited. However, it is very valuable in city fights or other close quarter battles.
You're right about squads being wasted if they don't have heavy weapons, but it doesn't have to cost a lot. One box of heavy weapons (the kind that makes three teams) can make 15 heavy weapons, although I only made 12 because I don't want mortars. That's enough for 12 squads, which is more than you will probably have in your army. just model the AC on the mortar supports, and the HB lying down. I think the HB looks better that way. put the missile launcher on regular guardsmen, that one takes no conversion.
I wouldn't get into the Guard if you dont want an expensive army to collect and play with... and along with buying a LOT of models, you will also be investing quite a lot of time into building and painting Guardsmen.
Sgt. brought up a good point about the Heavy Weapons Platoon box set, although it only comes with 3 bases for heavy weapon crews, you can get a pack of big bases for cheap and convert up to 15 heavy weapons from all the bits you get. Look through the Guard forum, I know there are multiple threads on this subject.
With what you have now, you dont really need to buy any tank or other vehicle models, just the basic guardsmen. The 20 model guardsmen boxes are nice because you can build any type of guy with those bits (officers, some of the special weapons guys, use the bodies to convert more gunners to streatch your heavy weapons box conversions) in addition to all the regular guardsmen you will want.
Then down the road, you might want to get a Basilisk and start on the "fun" stuff, maybe a Hellhound.
In 1000 points I would estimate you need about 50 - 75 Guardsmen models, most of which will be strategic speedbumps to soak up fire while your big units get things done. Some people have pretty good success taking ALL infantry armies, because the Guard can field so many men its not possible to kill them all in 6 turns.
If you start playing with the minimum amounts of Guardsmen, I think you will realize fairly quick that you need more basic cheap troops to last the game. Taking a few elite Guardsmen (like the Grenadier doctrine) will only lose you a few expensive men.
I always like to conclude with the advice of "Have fun and experiement a lot!"

in a 1500 you better have over 100.
and in an 1850 you should be getting close to 150 (i run ~140)
and of course bring as many HWs as you can.
and don't forget the tanks!
thanks illl get a couple of boxes of cadians and a couple of heavy weapons aswell (when i get the cash) also what do i get for mobility?? nothing in the codex jumps out at me. (i play sisters so anything that isnt seraphim doesnt jump out at me lol)
thanks for the advice once again
Chimeras are expensive (money and points ), but the only options for us. I would use your Stormtroopes with a Chimera for mobility, or think of Rough Riders. There was an option where you bought a Chimera with 10 Cadians that wasn't too bad a deal. The only other option is to use the light Infantry Doctorine to infiltrate around the board for mobility.
Demolishers are great, but like previously said, short range. My next Heavy support purchase would be a Basilisk.
