    Mechanized

So I've been looking at the IG boxed set of 10 troopers and a Chimera...

and I'm thinkin it's mighty tempting to just get like 7 of them to field as a Mechanized army,
(HQ, and 2 infantry platoons, all in Chimerae) and prolly picking up a couple Heavy Weapons teams to be part of each squad...

question is, has anyone done something like this, and does it work for a Guard army?

I think it's a great idea, the Doctrines I would suggest for you are:

    Mechanised....(Doh)

Sharpshooters- Excellent skill that pays off in time

Carapace Armour- I know it may be expensive but remember, with a Mechanised Army, you have fewer models and since guardsman aren't exactly the most expensive models...

Iron Discipline OR Chem Inhalers - Need some type of leadership/moral booster, I personally like Iropn Discipline more.

Stormtroopers or Rough Riders- You need some type of unit that can dish out some serious damage, Stormtroopers for shooting, or Rough Riders for Close Combat.
...And they shall fear the lasgun

Mechanized Armys can do quite well. I suggest if you want to play Mech, take Grenadiers Doctorine. Grenadiers can take Chimeras, and you don't have to take the Mechanized doctorine, so you have more flexibility with support squads etc. Having a 4+ armor save is good, as you will get the odd Chimera cracked, and that can be a lot of wounds.

I my opinion if you are going to mount them up, might as well take the best we have.

Would this be your first IG army?

is so, then i suggest taking a lil more balanced approach.

    I'd start off with:
    1. box of cadians
    2. 2 armored fists (chimera & 10guys)
    3. HW box
    4. Leman Russ

you can either buy some officers or make your own using cadian plastics (just pain them a lil different).

this will give you enough models for:
    HQ (in chimera 5men)
    Platoon (25men
    Armored Fist (chimera 10men)
    Leman Russ
    and a few Heavy/Special weapons

this will cost alot less than 7 armored fists, and will allow you to continue to make a Mechanized army, or (if you find you prefer a more balanced IG list) change your mind and make take a different approach.

but my main piont is that with this setup, you're not wasting money (everything here you'll use either way), and you're also getting a good feel of IG.

Well, the Doctrines I was thinking (after looking it over more) were:
    1. Grenadiers
    2. Light Infantry or Mechanized
    3. Chemi Inhalers
    4. SharpShooters
    5. Carapace Armor or Stormtroopers

I've already got a handful of HWs from old blister packs (enough to field a Fire Squad and Anti-tank squad)
I figured a HW and 'nade launcher in each infantry sqad (with Mechanized) makes each Chimera basically into a predator, cause the opening rounds it can use the heavy weapon (prolly lazcannons, or autocannons) to hit the enemy hard from a distance, then follow with move-and-shoot capabilty using the nade launcher when far enough out....

as for fielding them to try 'em out...
for now, until i get a complete 1000 point army at least, i'll be fielding them as Inquisitorial Stormtroopers allied into my marines army. just so i can see how they handle themselves.

Just in case you didn't know: Light infantry can't be combined with carapace armor.
As for mechanised being a viable army...Well, it can be pretty scary when you've got 6-7 Chimera's and some Leman Russ tanks for support.

If you want to find out more try looking it up with the search option...I posted a thread on Mech Guard a while ago and I saw another thread since then.

Cameleoline and Mechanized isn't a bad combo either.

don't forget after chimeras die (and they will die) they become basically a 4+ save bunker. with cameleoline you can hid in those wreaks and have a 3+ save

plus most players don't actually keep most of their troops in their chimeras. in fact alot of guys basically use their chimeras as empty light tanks, and have their normal firebase of infantry. if you do this, then camleoline will also be nice in keeping your guys alive longer (cause you will of course set them up in cover!!).

Mechanized will be discouraging at first, a lot of the battle is decided in deployment.

It will take practice, and winning comes with experience. That said, I think its a lot of fun and I enjoy playing it from time to time.
