What kind of Space Marine army would you play if you would enter a big tournament? Say the Grand Tournament.
All-round? Massive firepower? Assault army?
Worth taking into consideration (as you probably know) is that most players play marines (or other powerarmoured armies). Close behind is Ulthwé with starcannons and a few orks. Perhaps the new tyranids with the 'only-big-ones-army'?
To be honest I dont know how tourneys work. If you can rework your list for each opponent you play. When I play local tourneys and regular games I custom tailor my army for who I am playing against. Personally I wouldnt want to be caught in the middle of a CC with nids, therefore I would take a small assault squad and a lot of ranged weps. Against Tau, now I want to go with a full blown assault army. If you can change your army list during the tourney then tailor fit your army to the enemy and type of terrain played. If you can't well then a balanced army would work the best no? Take a variety of shooty units mixed in with assault units. Bikes, tactical squads, assault squads, scouts with sniper rifles the whole deal.
Then again, if you know how to play an army then I guess any list will be deadly in the right hands.
I guess all around would be better, because you can adapt to the various armies that you will be facing more effectively. I'm not sure how tournaments work, but you can select which units you take to the battle before the battle begins, right? So lets say you have an enemy that is shooty, such as the Tau. Bring in some of the CC squads. Vice versa.
Actually, it's up to how you want to score, but in general tournament armies tends to be concentrated to either shooting or close combat. The reason to this is that most people belive that they need that extra edge to win.
But I think that an all-round army would be the best, but that's only my personal thoughts, but then again an all-round army will get good composition scores.
Personally I think you should tailor your army to how they are supposed to be setup. Say your playing IW you should have alot of heavy support. Keep inline with what your army is supposed to be. This is how I build my armies.
Well as a tournament veteran here is how you should build your army to do well
A) strong firebase (Remember shooting is better than CC)
strong counter assault unit (Assault squad + chaplain is usually enough)
C) assault cannons
Fit those 3 and you'll do well.. You cannot, i repeat, cannot win a tournament by using a 1 dimensional army.. You must have shooting + counter assault in a marine army or you'll just get mauled by certain armies
Oh, I've entered a few 40K tournaments in my days - believe me! I just wanted to know what you others thought. One interesting thing thing was that you could change your armies during the tournament!! I've never heard of that - and don't like it either. I think it's a greater challenge to build an army that can take on anything instead of just making new ones all the time...
I vote all-round, since you'll always find use for your units even if they're not optimized for the enemy your facing. How many carnifexes hasn't fallen to the bolter, or avatars slaughtered by scout snipers?
Well, keep posting your thoughts!
