I am just about to start a marine army and I am not sure how to build it. Playing Eldar before I decided I do not like termies, too many points. I do on the otherhand like normal marines. I was looking at building an army sort of like this.
6x tactictal squads of 10, 3 with plasma cannon and 3 with lazcannon. Not sure if I should take the Plasmagun as well.
For the HQ I am really not sure. Playing a shooty army I am looking at a deathwatch kill team with 2x heavy bolters and the ammo that makes normal bolters 30". If I take this I will reduce my tactictal squad by 1. I was thinking about a master for close combat for when I do get charged. He would stay back until the enemy got close.
For Elite I am thinking dread's. The ones with the lazcannons. I am thinking maybe 2-3 of them if I have the points. I am a big fan of armor. Otherwise I do not see any elites I like. Suggestions??
The fast attack is where I get stumped. If I go close combat is it better to get the assaut squad with jumpacks or mount my existing 5 squads in rhinos? Should I mount a squad in one anyways? I really don't know :confused:
The heavy support is what I like! Shooty army I am looking at 2x predator Anniliators with side lazcannons and 1 predator anniliator with bolters for the sides. Should I take extra armor and how does the machine spirit work?
I am going to 1000 first, I like a lot of marines, 60 would be nice. But I also want a lot of shooty and heavy's. Please suggest what I can do. I am thinking of playing ultramarines because ultramarine blue is cool!

I wouldn't think to big to start with but thats me. You might want to test run different units. I think the armies good but you might want something to go into close combat even though its a shooty army. a large assault squad, assaulting dread, or some bikes would work. You also might want to get a whirlwind for hoard armies. you seem to be very anti tank with the plasma guns and lascannons. Try a dev squad. Are you going to use traits?

As mentioned playtesting's your best bet to get a feel for the unit's you like the look of.
If you want shooty army try having a look at tornado speeders plenty of shots and loads of manuverability which your tac squads might lack. A chaplian led assault squad would work nice as your counter assault unit.
Once you have the basic choices read Chaosbrynn's SM tacticas.

extra armor is nice. And the machine spirt is nice if you got two weapons of seven str. You will get one shot at 3's and one shot at 5's. It won't do as much on the bolter tank. It also makes your tanks more moble. move your 12" and get one shot at 5. And there right you will need a close combat element. When i first started playing SM my first enemy was a white scar and I had a shooty army and got whipped off the board on turn 4 because i didn't have anyone to stop there asaults. And never underestmate a termi. Drop 10 termis with a Chapi and 2 AC's and it will eat a unit. Plus with there saves they will prob get a second shot and an assault.
Ok, Here is what I have with your suggestions.
HQ: I took the deathwatch kill team. Nice shooty and not bad in HTH. They are like the jump pack troops without the packs. They have the nasty heavy bolters that have normal shot, 18" assault 3, and heavy 1 blast wounds on 2+. The rest of the squad uses Kraken bolts for range. 30"
Troops: I ended up with 5 units of tactictal squads. 3x with plasma cannons and 2x with laz. All have Plasma guns also. No transports, basic units, stand and shoot.
Elite: Dread with assault cannon and Missle Launcher. Str 6 due to no CC weapon. Str 6 is still nice.
Fast: 1 Assault squad with jump packs and close combat weapons.
1 Landspeeder Typhoon with 1x Heavy Bolter and 1x typhoon missle launcher.
Heavy: This is where I have fun! I took 1x Prediator anniliator and 1 distructor with extra armor and smoke gernades. If I cannot shoot I can still pop smoke so he does not die right?
1x Vindicator tank with extra armor and smoke.
I hope this gives enough template weapons for hordes and enough shooty for tank army's etc. I am not sure how it would do but I hope it will do well. Does that sound good? Maybe I will start out with 1000 points. Well whats everyone think about the changes?
I am still now sure how machine spirit works if I get stunned etc....
Also how about me throwing in 2x squads of five scouts with sniper rifles instead of one unit of marines? Same number just different weapons.

give your vindicator the power of the machine spirit upgrade this is very usefull for him because he can always move 6" and fire his ordance weapon with this. I wouldn't take plasma pistols in the tac. squads instead I would take power fists in as many squads and especially in the assault squads.
