hey everybody....i have been brainstorming the fluff behind my guard recently. and a couple of things in my fluff wont go with the army lists i see.. my army is basically going to be a self sufficient raiding force traversing the galaxy. capturing relics and reinforcing others until other reinforcements arive. etc. seeing as though they are quite a nomadic unit. i want to make a list with little or NO TANKS i cant believ i just said it. blasphemy. anyways i envision the army using alot of sentinels (fast mobile scouts seems to make sense to me) the army is ment to be highly trained as they are not just a defensive army (like i see evertime i read some fluff about ig (not once have i read about the ig being on the offence)). now my problem. i have no idea how to make an army i am looking for a 1000 points approx. are there any suggestions both unit wise and strategy wise for a list using my fluff? on a related note is it wise not to take tanks??
thanks in advance.
You said a nomadic unit, how about ruff riders? But tanks.... maybe just a hellhound? But no tanks BLASHPHOMY!!

By night he fought with pen and parchment.....

Do you have uber micro...????
i love ruff riders but the models are ****e... i wish there was a cheap soloution to that.... and i dont really understand the rulz for that tank. plus i dont really like that one. the only tank i was considering was a single basilisk.
For a raiding party it would make sense that they have rough riders. Anything based on the chimera chassis would be OK as well, as there pretty much light tanks. Leman russ variants would be out, but i dunno bout the basilisk thing. You'd think that a raiding party wouldn't have the resources (or the time) to set up some artillery, but...maybe you could treat the bassie as an artillery piece that a previous ally gave you as a gift for saving thier regiment.
Oh, and another thing, for a mobile anti tank unit try deep striking sentinels with auto cannons and hunter killer missles....mmm hammerheads die fast now.
For 1000 points, this could be a very feasible list.
Go with Drop Troops and maybe Light Infantry for the baseline doctrines so you can deep strike some sentinels and infiltrate other units, then add on Rough Riders for your fluff and pick one from Stormtroopers/Special Weapons/Hardened Veterans so you have another deep striking hard unit for tank or anything else hunting. (Veterans probably fit the fluff best, and they can be fitted out for more tasks.) That leaves one more doctrine open.
Salamanders might fit this army well.
IG with no Tanks, can be very effective. Mobile with no tanks, hmmmmmm....
One of the most interesting lists I ever heard of was am IG army with just big Platoons, and every squad had either a Meltagun or a Grenade Launcher and that is it. For 1000 pts you could roughly have 14 squads! Tanks and infantry are taken care of by the special weapons, and most armies can't chew through that many men.
I think tanks took a hit with 4th ed and with the new SM codex, damn Tank hunting Venerable Dreadnaughts!! Things are looking up though, as more people take more troops, my Tanks should have less AT fire!! I can only hope..........

Ok, here's the cool thing about no heavy support:
You get to deploy conscripts first. In a very long line.
Here's where the tactic becomes evil:
A macharian cross let's you move them after all infiltrators are down and scout moves are done.
All infantry is very viable. I'm taking it to my tournament.
I've seen that drawing in other threads, and I still don't get what it's depicting or why it's good.
I also don't get how the Macharian Cross helps. I don't think it can be used to redeploy conscripts. If you check the codex, the rules are pretty specific about the cross only working with normal infantry platoons.
Guard without tanks are in one word
Those points spent on tank can be spent elsewhere on more platoons with those lovely heavy weapons. Do not underestimate either the lasgun, it pretty weedy but like the insect when theres hundreds of them they are a potent force.
however for your fluff idea i would also sugest rought riders, why not use other models to substitute i.e. cadians on horses, as long as you have something that would represent a lance you should be able to get away with it no problem, and then you dont have to use those truly outdated models. Of course it will require a bit of converting but it may be worth it.
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
Why not use , TALLARN models? You could throw in storm troopers for the technical
side of your force, and then you could be primitave except for a rare choice of hellhound
