    New to IG

I have realised the mistake off not collecting IG and want to start collecting the Cadians. What is good to start off with?

Get a box of twenty Cadian Shock Troops, and the Codex.

Then buy another box of Shock Troops, and a Chimera.

You now have 40 troops, and one Chimera. That is two five man command squads, two platoon 10 man squads, and one armoured fist squad (with the Chimera).

If you want, you can buy the Armoured Fist box with the Chimera and ten troops, save a little money in the long run, and end up with ten extra grunts for now.

If you convert officers from regular troops, you can squeeze the minimum 40 man army from these boxes... But you'll then want/need heavy weapons.

A Heavy weapons box for 3 teams will make up to 15 heavy weapons, with a little converting and spare bodies for gunners and ammo carriers.

Hey, there, and welcome to the Guard.
1-Read the gorram codex. It will save you MUCH pain.

Anyways, I'd recommend that the first purchase you make is the Codex and a box of Shock Troops, and make up two squads out of them. After that, get the Cadian Battleforce Box. It's an incredable deal. You'll get enough Cadians to convert a Command Squad and Command Platoon, and to make an Armored Fist Squad, giving you a full legal army. Plus, it's got at least 6 Heavy Weapon teams. Don't let the thing on the side of the box that says 'Contains parts for 3 Heavy Weapon Teams' fool you-a bit of creativity and some leftover Cadians will make you plenty.
So, when you get those, I'd recommend you make:

    Command Platoon
    Officer
    Vox
    Guardsman
Use leftover HW bits and two Guardsmen to make a Heavy Weapon

    Command Squad
    Officer
    Vox
    Guardsman
Use leftover HW bits and two Guardsmen to make a Heavy Weapon

    1st Squad
    Sarge
    7 Guardsmen
    Heavy Weapon (Pick one)

    2nd Squad
    Sarge
    7 Guardsmen
    Heavy Weapon (Pick one)

    Armored Fist
    Chimera
    Sarge
    7 Guardsmen
    Heavy Weapon (Pick one)

After that, buy a Leman Russ. I'd recommend making something that allows you to switch out the hull-mounted Lascannon/Heavy Bolter.

Anyways, have fun with the Guard!

If you got the money you could buy the starter box. They are always good buys if you know your gonna stick with that army.

I'd recommend the Cadian battleforce box set. It comes with all those heavy weapons, 20 cadians, and, most importantly, a Leman Russ. You will (I almost guarantee) use a Russ in any list of 750 pts or more, so it seems wise to save yourself a few bucks and get it in this way.

Quite nice actually, I'd post pictures, but I'm too lazy right now. My converted heavy bolter teams look better than my stock lascannon teams.

I used some green stuff to make sandbags, and modeled the guardsmen lying down behind the sandbags. The ammo carrier is on a separate base that fits into the big base, so he can be removed when he is killed.

I haven't made the mortars, and am not planning on it, so I really only got 12 heavy weapons. I may build the mortars for command squads, but I don't want to make them any more of a target.

Yup, that's exactly what it has in it. Along with some plastic bits to make ruined building terrain.

As for what you should start off with: I recomend you make a small list (750-1000 points) and then start building your way up to it...So get the codex and RTFM!
