I'm making some backstory for my chapter and just want to know
Thanks, I will go there too
It should say something about this in the rulebook, I don't remember everything it said. Anyway yeah, it started somewhere around year 30,000, probably lasted a few hundred years or so.
The Horus Heresy started in the beginning of .M31, according to the Critical Hit timeline. The year 014.M31 is the year of the assault on Terra, the central battle of the Heresy. Seeing as the Great Crusade itself only lasted a few hundred years, I doubt the Heresy would take this long. However, to my knowledge, nothing concrete has been said about the timeframe of the Heresy. It could have happened over a few months or years, but probably no longer than that.

I'm guessing that It happened over the span of at least, at least ten years. It says everywhere that it happened 10,000 years ago so I'm guessing that t was around the beginning of the 31st milenium.

Von Romanoff
The Thousand Sons and The Ultramarines face eachother on opposite sides of a battlefield.
Bob: Move the troops into those strategic positions to face the chaos scum!
Magnus: *Eyes glow* You want to move the troops into the minefield.
Bob: *Turns to Sergeant* No, move them into the minefield instead.

Well I guess it couldn't have been that long now could it?
No it couldn't, at most the Hours Heresy was 3 years tops. All you need to do is look at the path of the battles: the Isstvan massacre, the droppod massacre (there were two events in the Istvaan system), the trap that depleted most of the imperial fists, the alpha legion holding off the ultramarines, the battle for mars which saw the turning of the titan legions, and the actual siege of terra. Couple of minor things along the way but those are it.
Also looking over Horus's battle plan cuts the time of the Heresy: Strike fast and cripple the legions that would not join him. Then confront the emperor at his very home.
Every time chaos launches a crusade against the imperium, they have the advantage every time but never win. Kinda funny that sheer luck keeps a dieing empire alive...
