I think this topic could belong in the conversion forum, but it would get lost there, and this is Guard specific.
OK. [drumroll]You've probably heard that it is possible to get up to 15 heavy weapons from one box.[/drumroll] It is.
=>$35 for the Heavy Weapons box,
=>$42 for 24 guardsmen bodies (assuming you want all 15 heavies, which means there are 12 unmanned weapons, which need 24 guardsmen to function, at $1.75 per guardsman).
=>$5 for the extra bases, which could be ignored because you'll use the extra bases for other things,
=>and $10 (used to be $6 or $8, stupid price hikes) for green stuff, which you probably have anyway,
=>about $92 for 15 manned heavies (or $120 if you don't have any extra bodies, and have to buy two whole boxes for $70).
=>That's $175 worth of models.
But, can I do the conversion and will it look good?
3 missile launchers
2 autocannons (I will build a third when I need it)
2 heavy bolters (I am about to build a third because I need it)
All this conversion involves is building the lascannons as normal, putting the missile launchers on regular bodies, and modeling the others lying down will green stuff sandbags.
Here is my Heavy Bolter Conversion. I don't have pictures of it unpainted, but maybe I will when I build the third heavy bolter.
First of all, i will recommend always, EBAY for your best and number one source. It would save you an incredible amount of money which could make your army really large .
You can get battleforces for 60$ shipping included already. I call that a steal.
Recently i got my first Battleforce (2 more coming through the mail )
Green stuff to me is optional. Without green stuff, i can produce:
3 lascannons - use normal stand
3 missilie launchers - use on normal infantry body.
3 heavy bolters - flamer gun conversion + mortar/Missile stand
Autocannons, i'd say you would need greenstuff for the tripod stand.
Then Mortars i guess if you really want them >.>
hvy bolter conversions.. bleh i'll say later lol.

you have a great point i will give it out a try.
it looks cooler. xD
If you don't want to spend money on extra Guardsmen, you can always just put one kneeling Guardsman on each base for the Lascannon, Autocannon, or HBolter, and leave it at that with the Loader on a sperate base, and you can have normal, standing Guardsmen on small bases with Missile Launchers.
My calculations for all of my heavy weapons were:
3 Kneeling LC's, big bases
3 Kneeling HB's, big bases
3 Standing ML's, small bases
And extra AC's and Mortars which I don't use.
Monetarily it stands as:
Heavy Weapons Platoon - $35
Extras from Shock Troops box - $35
Extra Bases (Itraded for mine, but nonetheless) - $5
Total adds up to $75, and that is all straight-up box sets from GW.
But, like Murekhalir stated, eBay is your best bet for cheap, possibly pre-assembled Heavy Weapons.
"Through most of the war we fought as nobles might. Never betraying, never decietful. But there came a point where tripping the soldier next to you might mean another day of life..."
I forgot to mention, if your heavy weapons team is in a line squad, and therefore replaces two guardsmen models from the squad, it doesn't need any "extra" bodies. But, if the heavy weapons team is in a support squad, then you need "extra" bodies.
Another thing you can do, which requires very little conversion skill, is modelling the Guardsmen to be carrying the weapons, as opposed to firing them.

I agree with jancz. Troops lying down look much better than guys carrying weapons. The conversion really isn't that hard.
