I was playing tau with a mech sisters list (I had picked my list before I found out I was playing tau.
Unsurprisingly, after the first turn, most of my tanks were dead (fortunately, the 2 exorcists managed to take out 3 broadsides and a railhead). All that was left was a single exorcist, and 2 inconsequential transports. Surrounding the live exorcist, though, was a loose barriar of dead tanks, which provided exactly 2 firing lanes, (these were seperated by 4" or so, so I had to move in order to shoot out of one or the other . The only things that could feasibly hit it, were stuff moving into those lanes (which wouldn't allow them to shoot at me) or the railhead which was frustrated by the building and tanks which obscured the exorcist. Fortunately, it didn't even hit, so this didn't matter, and I had some seraphim which could probably have destroyed it, if we hadn't run out of time (took so long to pry them away from halo 2 that there was barely any time for this game). Before this, however, the exorcist did manage to take out a full crisis squad.
The point is, is using tanks as walls of protection a viable strategy, if you're playing a list that is shooty enough to take out all your tanks anyway, or was I just lucky? Also, could it ever be a cost effective strategy to take maybe 2 rhinos and moving to a place where they protected the exorcist (and letting their squads out after that)? I mean, my exorcist took down about 500 points worth of Tau, which pays off the 5 rhinos in its immediate vicinity, plus the exorcist, with extra points left over. What do you think?

nice! i've said before that just because a unit takes a transport, dosen;t mean they have to be in one
It doesn't really look like an odd strategy to me as it seems to work, what you also might want to try it to deploy the 2 exorcist in such a manner behind cover that after your first turn and after the first 6" max move they are in line of site with the broadsides and especially 2 will have crushed them easing up the firepower on the remains of your ammount of tanks.
