That's not quite it. If the guy survives-ie, passes his armour save, the gun just overheated. If he didn't survive, that's the gun exploding in his face.

The plasma-genrator-core-thingy in the gun gets hot and explodes the equicelant to a plasma bolt everywhere within a small area. It's not concentrated so ou still get an armour save. At least that's my guess. It gets hot as in 100s maybe 1000s degrees C hot.

The plasmagunner doesn't have to die, but simply be "out of action". is a SM fails a overheat save, it's safe to assume that the gun will not work anymore and the SM is probably wounded (out of action) or dead.

now when a guardsmen fails his armor save for a overheat... well i think we can assume he's turned into fried chicken.

Also, I'd like to point out that trying to rationalize little fluff things like this will make your head hurt like math.[/Kiki]

Perhaps the intense heat welds his power armour's joints together immobilizing his arms -- rendering him unable to fight.

Cool, that answers a question I was planning to ask about whether or not a guardsman still gets his armour save when his plasma weapon blows. Thanks BoxANT.

Sorry, but you're all wrong. You see, there is unfortunately no opening in Space Marine power armor through which methane gas can be vented. As a result, the gas tends to build up inside the suit, often to dangerous degrees (especially after chili night). When the plasma gun overheats, it does so to a spectacular degree, and although it wouldn't kill a Space Marine so much as burn his arm, it does tend to ignite said gas, resulting in a rather messy and ignominious death. This flaw in the armor is currently being addressed by the Fabricator General, who is trying his best to find a means other than the embarassing "fanny vent". Just think of what the Guardsmen would say about that.
