I'm considering getting some Rough Riders for a counter-charge unit. I don't like the price though. I'm not willing to shell out ten bucks each for five to ten of these guys.
I want to use the Xeno Mounts doctrine. (But not carapace, because I don't want to have each squad in my army cost more.) Does anyone know which White Dwarf (U.S.) the rules are in?
Also, has anyone considered using Empire Knights for the models, with appropriate conversions? I think the armoured horse could represent the better armour save, and the spike on its head would be the reason for the extra attack. Maybe fire in its eyes to show how vicious it is. Has anyone done this conversion? I already have one box of Knights, with only the horses and one knight assembled.
I'd look up the new WHFB plastic cold ones. You can now buy them as a seperate plastic sprue (so very cheaply), and Imperial Guardsmen riding big nasty lizards would look.......cool (and definately WYSIWIG for Xeno-mounts).
Wow - your right! $4.00 for a Cold One (body only). That's still $40 (mounts) + $17.50 (guardsmen) for a ten man squad, but it sure beats $100! That is definitely my next addition to my army.
Now, do I make a vet sarge to lead them, and if so, give him plasma pistol/CCW, bolt pistol/CCW, or las/CCW?
My friend has the weirdest collection of rough riders you'll ever see. He used an orc bike, a space marine bike, a guy with a jet pack, 2 cold ones, two horses, a boar from the ork boar boyz, a bare and a snake. It is about the strangest unit you'll ever see.
Give him a bolt pistol and ccw. The plasma pistol can also be good but he could die though with xeno mounts it is less likely. Either of those options is good but the plasma pistol costs a good deal more.

Yes, you can actually get Rough Riders with a 3+ save if you take both the options. Although, that is a hefty amount of your doctrines gone, it would certainly be an unexpected surprise for your enemy.
The Imperial Guard is like a punchbag - No matter how hard you hit it, it'll always be ready for a fight.
Vcitory for the Imperial Guard comes about through the sacrifice of our men, not through the cowardly survival tricks of other armies.
...using Army Builder...
Xeno Mounts isn't an option in Army Builder! grumble...
I think I will take Iron Discipline and Drop Troops as my 2 remaining doctrines. Sound like a good idea? Thanks for pointing out the carapace option.

You can get them online now under creature feature on the UK site.
