I am thinking about adding 5 GK and a DH HQ too my 1500 pt IG army. I also can't decide if I should go 1250 Ig or 1500 IG, but that will be discussed elsewhere. My real question is, Which HQ is better for a relatively small guard army? Inquistor Lord or GM. I am looking for some CC, which I desperatly need as a guard player
Well, if you looking for a nasty CC HQ unit, I should point you to the Witch Hunter Inquisitor, Nasty equipment and a very nasty CC retuine (6+ Power weapons!)
Not that The DH Inquisitors suck, its just there are better at being shooty, and the GM cost alot along, add min. 3 termies and its like 300 pts and above.
Really its what you want to do, but you should take a look and the WH CC unit, ask around in the WH forum, you should get some responce.
I'd suggest *not* using an allied GK HQ unit in such a small army - you'd be much better off expanding your core force first! 2000pts or so is a good point to start thinking about allies, in my experience.
A GK HQ (ie, a Grand Master or Brother-Captain, plus bodyguard) is terribly expensive, but extremely strong. If you want to get a unit of these sooner rather than later, use a BC + 2-4 GK Terminators. After your IG is built up more, you can expand that unit to a GM + 4-5 GK Terminators.
As for GK in power armor, I'd suggest using them only in units of 8-10. A unit of 5, which you mentioned, will not really be able to do much before it gets taken out.
Another Possibility, I don't knoiw how well it would work, never having tryed it myself, would be a CC retinue with an inqusitor Lord.
You could have the Inquisitor Lord with something like terminator or artificer armour, with a force weapon, a familiar, 3 combat servitors, a few acolytes for wound allocation. If you were fighting daemons, a hierophant would be useful as well.
Alternatively, instead of giving the Inquisitor armour, give the acolytes artificer armour, and have them soak up the wounds, and hopefully save most of the time with their 2+ save.
Other than that, there is always the GK hero with terminators- a devestating CC force, but also very expensive. Then you would have to decide on GM or BC. The Grandmaster is horrendously expensive, probably costing as much as the IQ lord and retinue by himself, but he is undoubtedly one of the most powerful HQ choices in the entire game. The Brother-Captain is the cheaper way to go, and he's not so bad himself.
As Megalo said, 1500 points is probably not a good time to be taking allies, but rather buliding up your own army. IG can get alot for the points it would cost for the allied HQ.
