What does everyone use for there veteran models?
im going to be playing cadians very soon and not sure if i should branch out and use say gaunts ghosts, or catachan or even steel legion.
what does everyone else use? do they just nominate the regular cadians as vets? do they paint them something differnt? do they use a differnt troop type like mentioned above?
btw im leaning towards steel legion as my choice, or maybe a class guard like tallarns or vahalla's
I know some people use catachans as vets and cadians as troops.
I use cadians tricked out with backpacks and kneeling legs from the heavy weapon spruce. Since you have to get heavy weapons pretty much anyway, I just model my gunners lying down, since it looks much cooler. Pics here. Of the lying down gunners, not the vets, which borrowed their legs. The head with sunglasses is my favorite, and I used them for my vets. Backpacks all around, also.
When I get around to painting them, I might paint their armour differently, or give them a camo scheme.

was thinking steel legion BUT i would want allot of plasma gunners and that would get expensive. adn since the blister comes with plasma and nady launcher it kinda sucks cause i would hardly never use the nady launcher.
if i go with the cadian models i can use the ones for vets or for my troops which would be nice.
how many vet squads do u normal field in a 1500 point game? im thinking ATLEAST 1... maybe 2. 3 plasma gunners is quite nice in a squad that can infiltrate or DS with the right doctrines.
I normally field 1 vet squad in a 1500 point game, since that is all the models I have right now, and I don't want to spend a doctrine. I go with 3x plasma guns, no heavy weapon, but that may change if I switch out my heavy weapons from support squads into line squads. Also, I want my vets to be mobile so they avoid casualties, but in most games they have just sat there, so I may throw a lascannon in soon. I always infiltrate them if I can. They are very nice for taking down marines.
ya im thinking of infiltrating mine, or maybe throwing them in a chimera, with a hellhound or leman russ as support. should be a good flanking combo, and distraction for that matter.Originally Posted by sgt screwball
For my vet's i'm just going to use cadians converting up to the eyeballs with some special equipment to designate them as vets. I'm thinking of making tactical screens, GS sunnies (i have a knife that can do that instantly) and iPods (or 'tactical audio interfaces') made out of sprue.
i haven't made them yet, and thus don't know how effective it will be, but i'm going for a 6 man squad w/ heavy bolter and three GLs.
BTW, you can only ever have one vet squad unless you have the veteran's doctrine.
They shall be my Imperial Guard and they shall know some fear...

I like veterans. I go for a laz cannon and 3x Plasma guns. What I've done in unlike the regular Candian painted troops have a camoflage suit under the armour and backpacks from the heavy weapon sprues. All the non special/heavy weapon ones have something special about them - in the sense of holding a knife or clearly being an alcholic, etc. Oh and all the lasguns have 'double barrels'. I think they're a really fun unit.
Hmmmm, my vets don't stand out much from the other cadian models, although I have enjoyed giving them sort of SMGs and carbine lasguns. I took a catachan long pattern lasgun and cut away the barrel then glued the falsh guard straight to the main case of the gun. They have CC weapons in the other hand and I deem the SMG/carbines to be small enough to be counted as pistols. I know I lose the extra shots at 24 but still, it gives them a better punch in CC when I counter attack. As for a standing out paint scheme I don't think that's a good idea, I'd rather draw the attention to my sentinel chimera than my pricey and important vets.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
You could always use mordians to represent your vets...they'd stand out A LOT...maybe a bit too overkill though.
You could always just do something like paint a skull onto the sleeves of the guys you are using as vets (a la Rasczak's Roughnecks).
I think that the vets should have a very subtle, yet noticeable difference from your basic troops (in my opinion). But I personally prefere to keep everyone i my army looking uniform and standard (that why I've got a 2000 point Mordian army).
