My friend puts heavy weapon teams in his infantry squads but a guy we played with who also collects IG told him to take them out, put them in command platoons, and just advance his troops. Should he?
Not really. IG is more of a shooting army. I hardly even move my guard.
By day he fought with sword and shield.....
By night he fought with pen and parchment.....

Ever since the end of screening, it's a bad idea to have too many Heavy Weapons all in one spot. It's a much better idea to put them in your squads so that you have 9 points of ablative armor before the Heavy Weapon dies.
DO NOT REMOVE YOUR HEAVY WEAPONS FROM YOUR SQUADS! If you want MORE heavy weapons, put them in your command squad.
It's worth a krak!
Max your HW with your squads. Also max Special Weapons. An IG Infantry army is not one to move around and be effective.
If you want movement, take a Veteran squads, or use Light Infantry to move at the beginning of a game, but generally keep your squads fireing a HW. Even for your command squads, give them something not so "dangerous" like HB or a Mortar. Guard infantry needs to max out HW, that is the strenght of IG.

You can make an effective IG force if all you do is max out on infantry and only use the meltagun uprade. Then just rush em all forward towards your enemy.
Thats if that is what you are into. Personally, I always put a heavy and special weapon in my guard squads. But try and be logical with what weapon combos you use. I usually have three types of squads for 3 situations:
Light infantry: heavy bolter/grenade launcher
Heavy infantry/light armor: Autocannon/plasma gun
Heavy Armor: Missile launcher meltagun
For my heavy weapons squads I always take 3 lascannons and MAKE SURE i put them in COVER
Grouping weapons in squads for specific targets makes sure you are getting the most use outta your guns. You dont wanna have to waste a grenade launcher shot on a dreadnaught when you fire your missile launcher at it.

If you are just gonna be static, definetly put hw teams in the squads. Spreads em out and gives you good firepower. If you are playing a game where you have to advance keep them in the command platoon or you end up wasting oppurtunities to shoot or move.
Definetly add spec weps to every squad. Make sure that you don't add so many hw or spec weps that you make your army expensive but easy to kill.
