alright...i'm betting that this question is a stupid one, but since i am kinda new to 40k i will ask anyway. i have 2 tactical squads in my 1000pt army, both having a vet. sergeant/5 bolters/1 hvy bolter. if i have this setup, then when i move that group of units, does the single heavy bolter cause the entire group to not be able to shoot if they move? because i know that heavy weapons have to be stationary to shoot, but does this affect the entire squad?
if this is the case, then would i be better off having 2 tac squads with a vet sargeant/5 bolters (or 6 bolters to fill in the empty space left by the hvy bolter) and a seperate devestator squad w/ 2 heavy bolter and 2 lascannons? what do you guys think?
only the heavy bolter would be unable to shoot. Happy hunting
A rules lawyer is someone who says that money changhers are ok in church becuase jesus only threw them out of the temple.
Hippo is correct.
Also, I would suggest AGAINST mixing heavy weapon types in Devestator squads.
For example, you said you would put 2x Heavy Bolters (Anti Infantry) and 2x Lascannons (Anti Tank). This is bad, because each model in the unit MUST fire at the same target, and the Heavy Bolters are meant for something completely different than the Lascannons. You should have similar weapons (Anti Tank, Anti Infantry, etc.) in each squad, not mixed, as mixed severely limits your squad.

Actually i find heavy bolters and lascannons work well together i f you look at lascannons as anti-monsterous instead if you have a predator with heavy bolter sponsons and a devastators with lascannons and heavy bolterss it can be quite effective as cannon 2 plasma cannnons and 2 heavy bolters
this is quite true but itĀ“s better to have 4 missile launchers in your devastator than 2 lascannons and 2 HB. an HB canĀ“t damage a medium tank. so your wasting 2 heavy weapons that turn. if you use 4 missile launchers these can damage both infantery and tanks pretty hard.Originally Posted by librarian Augustine

If you wanted to mix, the only way id see it being point effective, would be to add tank hunters to the following squad, 2 ML 2 LC, this allows you to save on some points, while still having the ability to obliterate any annoying 14 armour tanks. OR without tank hunters, plasma/hb. For bascially the same reason, it allows you to bunch through annoying 2+ armour save but doesnt blow out the whole rest of your list as far as points go, thought its pretty spendy. Finally if your new, id just like to let you know that you should never ever, take a multimeta in a troop squad. Note: i did not say metla gun. They are however good on bikes and landspeeders.
Yeah, the Multi-Melta in a Tac or Dev squad is basically retarded. Unless your opponent is just a complete moron it will never be better than LasCannon, and often worse.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
so if i have a squad of 5 bolters and a sergeant...against lets say 6 fire warriors...can my units shoot at seperate fw's or do they all have to target one single unit within that squad?
also how many bolters should i throw in if i want a 4 ML dev squad?
