i wanted some peoples opinions on whether or not they think hardended veterans are worth taking. I was thinking about taking a squad of them because all of the heavy and special weapons they get, plus they can infiltrate. What are your thoughts?

Now...I'm no experienced Guard player, I'll tell you that much. In fact, I haven't played a single battle with them just yet. But in my opinion, a squad of Veterans very well may be worth it. They can infiltrate, for one, which is just fun. Only 8 pts. apiece not including the Sergeant...Can have a heavy weapons crew, up to three special weapons, the Sergeant gets access to the Guard Armory, and then the other...what, four guys? Have lasguns or laspistols and HTH weapons, which basically make them the human shields. They have points costs over Storm Troopers, and all Storm Troopers have over them is the 4+ save. A Trooper with Infiltrating is 11 pts. per guy, and only two of them can have special weapons. No heavy weapons at all. Now don't get me wrong...Troopers are awesome, too, just cause they're cool, but I'd personally go with a Veteran squad over a Storm Trooper squad.

Veterans are awsome. My squad has 3 flamers, with my v sar. having a bolter-flamer, all mounted in a chimera with you guessed it a hull mounted heavy flamer. Mind you I play 'Nids alot, but unit is devestating. Like wise you could give them plasma guns or whatever and go tank hunting. There cheap to. Now if I could just fit in that doctrine that alows 3 squads of them...

Personally I might not put them in a Chimera...but yeah, the Veterans Doctrine sounds mighty nice. If only I could fit in the POINTS...though I still need to replan my army with all the new info I've received. Anyways, I'd definitely go with Veterans over Storm Troopers, and maybe even have the Veterans Doctrine so you -can- have a squad in a Chimera, and plus you could have a squad infiltrating at the same time. Go for it. :w

In my humble opinion, vet squads are best when they are manning your really important weapons. The ones that you don't want to miss with, such as lascannons and plasma rifles. I load them up with both weapons and watch them slay vehicles and space marines with their greatly improved BS skill.

I like the idea of the veterans very good.
Although I haven't had time to play my IG's yet I think they would proove their right in battle.
They got access to more differnt weapons than the normal IG squads, so I see it as a possebility.
Also I see it as a great oppurtunity to do some crazy converting or even including some really good looking minis.
I was thinking of adding delaqoue gangers from the necromunda range to use as my veterans.

I'm a Dark Eldar player and I just started to collect some IG. After looking thru the codex, I thought Hardened Veterans were great. Then it hit me, they cost 8 points a piece. A basic DE warrior costs 8 points and you get a better WS and Init. What? Hardened Veterans are a rip off points wise.

A basic DE warrior may cost 8 points like the Veteran...but think about this. Veterans can get a Heavy Weapon team, up to three special weapons, plus they are Infiltrators. I honestly think that makes up for their lack of WS and Initiative.

Evidently the whole idea of the vet. trooper was oriented around the BS and the associated access to weaponry, the real value of vets lies in paying for themselves at range i.e. a vet squad of 100pts knocking out a rhino and 6 marines (+ special weapons) of 130 pts or so. For the marine player, this is quite painful and will often make him think twice about charging vehicles with low armour their way. A DE troop squad may match a SM in CC with init and WS, but it will likely come under fire before getting there, and when it does, the higher T and S of the SM along with their use of power weapons or the "and they shall know no fear" rule tends to weigh down heavily on DE squads. It's the matter of distances, either range and BS of the firing troops(IG) or the movement and WS of the transported troops (DE).

Vets are a nice squad to have in your army. In a chimera they can lay down heavy fire even in a chimera(they an shoot ou tof the hatch) then after they can be sacificed to block enemy changin your line. Also greatly capture quaters. Now with a BS 4 three meltas or plasmas can greatly deal alot of damage to marines. Can be armed with power fist or better a power weapon and may take out a weakened marien squad. I think taking vets is worth it.
