I tried to create some armylists for my SM army and I discovered that I have for some units direct role to fullfil and some other units I place in army only because they are good for harrasing opponent which could either ignore them and take loses or target them. So my primary units will have better chance to survive/complete objectives.
I browsed through armybook and tried to separate units on primary (general game winning) and secondary (support and special task) in effort to better undestand principles of armybuilding.
What i think, primary units tend to cost 200+points and make core of army, secondary are in general under 150point and support main units or cover weak area (antiarmour, countercharge...)
What do you think about it (it is just about rules, not fluff) does it make sense? Could be good army without primary units depending only on secondary? Would be more powerfull army with maxed out primary units and no support? Or is crucial ballance? Did I missed anything? ;-)
Primary (Units meant to win the game, do most damage and survive)
10marines squad with tooled up character + vet sgt for close combat (Assault, command, infiltrating veterans, tactical with rhino)
Strong 10marines shooty squads (with rhinos, las/plas, 2melta drop pod)
10marines devastators with ML or HB
Assault termies in deep strike or LR
In vehicle based army, primary units can be bike squads, land speeder squadrons or lots of dreadnoughts
Secondary (units for harrassing, fire support, countercharge, objective claiming, tank hunt)
smal units of scouts with HB/ML and/or sniper rifles
smal units of marines Las/Plas or Plasma cannon/Plas
Lone bikes, dreadnoughts or landspeeders (maybe in deep strike as tank hunter)
Any tanks (Never saw funcional SM tank army)
Hard to classify are
Lone characters (mostly librarians) with jump pack for tank/weak units hunting, wich have roles as support but cost lots of points and can be hard to kill
Shooty termies for the same reason
Well with me my entire army is support for the close combat assault squads, which charge in and kill everything. My shooting is mostly for harrasing and killing tanks/strong squads of anti marine goodness. The only time i really use shooting for clearing out squdas is when im faced with really strong close combat squads or against tyranids.

The idea is sound, but the lines are blurry.
I have seen many armies completely comprised of what you deem "support units" and I have seen armies that use only "core" units.
More importantly, this pretty much follows the FOC. All in all it depends on the players inclination. For instance you said that assault terminators deepstriking or in a land raider are a "core" unit. Personally, I wouldnt relly on that combo in any game of any size. Assault terminators are too unreliable and land raiders tend to either take up so many of your points the rest of your list is too small or in large games, get blown to pieces because of the ammount of anti-tank weapons.
Your choices for "core" and "support" can be summed up pretty easilly. A "core" unit is any unit that you give enough members to to be able to survive direct antagonization by your oponent. Support units are those wich you take as little as possible because they have a certain job to perform and only require a few marines or is a vehicle.
So to sum up:
Any squad close to or at full strength.
Any min maxed squad or vehicle.
My question to you is: Whats your point?
Mentor of Space Marine Commanders far and wide.
Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:
1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
Hi, The Doctor, CNN. Same Question.
Also, why aren't a big squad of Sniper Scouts with HBolter or MLauncher a core unit? Anything within 36" would have to face a lot of shots.

Blood for the Blood God! Beer for the Bronze Keg!
Maybe the point he is trying to make is for helping the fellow new player? Pretty much i think its this.
Core- anything that can cuase aroud 50 percent casulties in 1 turn, or that can survive squads blasting away.
Support- anything that doesn't fit into above .
