Hey yall, ii recently decided to start IG and ending my term with Space Marines. As for what i need help with is what units do i need. I dont have the codex (yet)

i want my army to be like this:

i would like to have mainly infantry platoons sit back and shoot away as other armys charge toward me. I also want tanks like leman russ and basalisks to sit and fire butt loads of big weapons. it would look like this: X= tanks O=platoons Y=heavy weapons squads.

Y Y Y Y
O O O O
O O

it would be scattered around the table, but i use platoons as shields and fire HW and tanks over them. also, i would use this many squads but it will look something like this.

problem is that your army has no moblity. Youi should think of fitting at least two chimeras

But you just said that you wanted them to stand and shoot...

True, this basic design needs mobility. Maybe 1 platoon should focus on shooting, and another on moving? Or some Armored Fist or Sentinels? The options are wide open, the Guard has many different styles to be used.

A guard army that is designed that defensively will never win a game. Sure, guard do fight defensively, but you gotta have some counter-attack units. If not, who ever you are playing will just sieze the objecitve, hide, and wait for the game to end.

If I were you I'd have two platoons. One with heavy bolters, autocannon, maybe even a lascannon, grenade launchers, and plasma guns. The other one would have flamers. Just flamers and Vet. Sargents. One will hold the line, while the other will counter attack. Or, and now that I think about it I like this idea better, an armored fist squad with a flamer, Vet. Sarge, and Chimera. Also, take a Hellhound. Great for killing an Infantry advance. Give it a pintle-heavy stubber and you get six shots a turn in addition to the imfamous inferno cannon.

You can use the different types of miniatures in the same army. But you might need to justify why there are so many different types of uniform in your army depending where you play (eg. Games Workshop).

You are NOT allowed to mix the Doctrines given for those regiments given on page 58-61. You are allowed to pick a specific regiment from pages 58-61 for all your Doctrine choices, or use up to 5 for your own special regiment. I am trying to say that you cannot apply the 'Valhallan Doctrines' to your Valhallans troops, and then claim to also be using the 'Cadian Doctrines' for your Cadians as well.

And for Gods sake its V A L H A L L A!!!
IG since '95.

if you play at a local store i doubt you will need to justify anything. I really really sudgest to invest some point in a Vets with a chimera with three special weapons either meltas or plasma. They are moble, have BS of 4, can have three special weapons, and still can use a heavy weapon and shoot it from within a chimera. Sentinals are an average counterattack/moblew unit. Get them to back up any moble element withh either multilasre or my fav heavy flamer. Oh and make sure oyu have a standard bearer. Way cheaper ten giving everyoen a vox.

I disagree, having at least two ordance tanks ( Basilisk, Leman Russ ) forces the enemy, taking out a squad a turn isn't exactly something you can ignore. Having said that mobility is the key to the game, besides dropping some heavy stuff for Chimera's isn't much of a dump. I use my Chimera on the defence all the time, usually to block an enemies path to my Basilisk.

BTW does a heavy stubber work like a storm bolter I mean a SB is assault where as the stubber is heavy, so do you have to stay stationary for it to work? or can you fire it regardless because its pintle mounted?
