I've been discussing some Vindicator tactics recently was wondering if this would be considered cheezy:
1) Give the Vindicator Power of the Machine Spirit and extra armor. That way if it's shaken or stunnded it can still move and fire its demo cannon.
2) When the game starts put an empty Rhino infront of the Vindicator. That way it can't be killed on the first turn if the enemy has a good heavy weapon lined up on it. If they kill the Rhino it becomes a piece of terrain, more often than not, and then Vindicator is then free to move from behind and blast away next SM turn.
I think the second is a little cheezy, but when facing the Tau with as many railguns as they can cram in maybe it's not such a bad thing.
Not that I'm an expert on what is cheesy, but I probably wouldn't use a vindicator without machine spirit. Putting the Rhino in front is going a step past screening a squad with one but as an opponent I probably wouldnt care that much if you wanted to buy a 50 point 1st turn screening unit because by turn 2 I'd make sure to move and have an angle on it anyway.
I don't think it's too wise to take a Vindictator without a lot of upgrades. That's probably pretty standard.
Screening is a ligitimate, common tactic. That's not cheesy.
So to answer the question, I'd say you're on the right track if you want to field a Vindicator and get at least one shot with it!
I like the idea of Demolishers, but I find in game terms that they're just to difficult to use effectively. A "weapon destroyed" result REALLY jacks them up! If they had side armor of 12 or 13, and a heavy bolter instead of a storm bolter, then I think they'd be great!
Since we are on the subject of vindicator tactics i was wondering what armies people find the vindicator most effective against
Necrons, Chaos and sometimes bugs. They work a treat against anything with a tough basic unit, like Necrons and Chaos. It's AP is high enough to negate the armor save and it's also double toughness, even of a Necron lord on foot. Really nice when your enemy DS a unit of Chaos terminatos and you make them disappear just as quick as they arrive. I've seen a Vind work well against a swarm bug army, but it was also backed up by a devastator squad with 4 heavy bolters to clean up anything the Vind missed.Originally Posted by zealous_894
Its great against anything, as good as a lascannon v's big Tyranids, as good as a Whirlwind v's small stuff. Squishes MEQ's on a 2+ and is nasty anti-tank.
Only the Assault Cannon comes close in flexibility.
Necros its good, if you want to kill a Monolith its the best way or theres squishing the Tins.
Eldar it doesnt seem to do so well against as Whilrwinds can do the same job from a position of impugnity.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
On the subject of cheese don't worry about it, here is why. The tau player will probalby fall backward on his @$$ because he will be laughing so hard at your screen here is why. Instead of taking just the tank and he has several strenght 10 ap 1 weapons you take 2 tanks at least. What are you solving. In my opinion that is a bad strategy. Dont even bring a vindicator. What can they be used for that a whirlwind or devastator squad cant do, against tau.
On the subject of tactics. They are effective against only one thing in my opinion, utterly desimating a squad of high toughness good armor value units. And man if you can get a terminator squad in the cannon sights it is the best feeling you will ever get when that 200+ point squad is destroyed in one turn one shot. Other than that a whirlwind or devastator squad is a better choice.

Vindicators are fire magnets, but when they live they can be awesome. If I take a vindicator, I always take power of the machine spirit.
It blows things up really well, but only when they get kind of close. High toughness, high armor, and high cost models are priority targets for the vindicator. Anything with a lascannon or something similar is a high priority target for the rest of the army.
If you are fighting against anything with low armor or toughness like eldar, a whirlwind or two will serve you better. A whirlwind can hide behind some terrain and blast away for the whole game, while a vindicator will eventually get put out of action.
I can read now!
that's what i thought. i was playing 'gainst armoured company today and my vidicator took out two tanks and didn't get destroyed himself but then again it was lucky that i hit that much
I sometimes use the vindicator and when I do this I give him the power of the machine spirit. this is because if he get an glancing or penetrating hit he will always take out one shot because of crew stunned.
I give my vindicator the Power of the machine spirit, extra armour and dozer blades. move the vindicator through terrain and watch how entire squads get demolished by his cannon
