    Snipers

I was reading through the codex, and looked up the entry for sniper rifles, and then it hit me... sniper rifles always wound on a 4+, and hit on a 2+. I did some quick number crunching and then it occured to me that a squad of them could make excellent monster killers. Granted, the enemy unit can still make a cover save as normal, but I mean, if a squad of ratlings, for instance, takes 10 shots at a c'tan, statistically 9 will hit, 5 will wound, and 2 will be saved against. Leaving that necron god with 3 of it's wounds pissed away by rifle-toting hobbits. However, I've never seen or heard of anybody using them in this way, and I'm left to scratch my head. Are they not good monster killers? Can they actually do that? Has anybody ever thought of this before? Surely I can't be the only one...

My prior experience with snipers has been a small group acting as a special weapons squad attached to my HQ, and they've been pretty useful for pinning assaulting units or focusing on a group of gk terminators and whittling away one every turn (which they typically do) but they're nothing to get really excited about. But I've also never tried them in the anti-monster role (I usually play guard or necrons, and the necron player doesn't have a c'tan yet... hence why I'm starting to plan) Any thoughts?

Three sniper rifles is not enough for monster hunting. The only way to do it is with a big squad of ratlings.

I always take a squad of 10 ratlings...and they always totally rock. If anything they're great for finishing off hive tyrants with one or two wounds on it...picked off a brood lord once his retinue is gone, of course killing a C'tan (ratlings make it so easy), and then for just peppering a squad of whatever.

that's what I was thinking, a 10pack of ratlings to try and give me a shot in hell to stop his c'tan (because god knows all my lascannons will be busy as hell trying to get rid of those damn monoliths)

You should get a ten hobbit size unit of ratlings. They are the cheapest unit you can buy for guard.
Ten ratlings for $20! Not a bad deal for 110pts.

Oh on a side note. When fighting the necrons take three russ tanks and force your opponent to "phase out".

I may have to seriously look into ratlings then, I was always somewhat leery about it because they would require a doctrine point, but if they're that good I probably might just have to make some room for them somewheres.

    and, about the side note,
I dunno, I have mixed feelings about armor vs. necrons, because they auto glance... I have nightmares about my buddy who loves to use veil of darkness and show up right next to my bassy/leman and yell "boo!" and get lots of glances and leave me with a 160 some point immobilized snow plow. (Don't laugh, it happens quite a bit despite my best efforts, leaving me to wonder if perhaps just to be an ass I should just go all guard platoons on him one day and just slowly, menacingly trudge across the board, just to deny him the satisfaction of disabling some armor) On the other hand, I find basilisks can be handy for trying send them home prematurely. But only if I hide them away and surround them with infantry.

I used to field a ten ratling squad and they have brutalised most things they come across. they now live on my must not sell shelf, covered in dust. I think they are getting camouflaged myself...

Use your men and impassible terrain to cover your basilisk. Russes are quite effective, once again use your men to cover it, don't give him room to deepstrike close. It will make the bugger sweat, if he deepstrikes he runs the risk of running into your men or falling back to far to fire, remember he can only rapidfire. He's put a massive squad all bunched up just for you to land templates on.

I would love to use Ratlings, but my army's fluff (medieval) doesn't really allow the midgets of doom to fit in.

I wonder if I could fluff it some other way... any ideas?

medieval? like as in warrior weapons? That's kinda a tough one, but maybe say they're off world mercs... or off world specialists sent by a local warmaster to make the force more effective... or they've got a sniper-crossbow?
