In a 500 point game it does matter if your 30-90 points off(Over OR under)
Imperial Guard aren't that hard to make small game lists for either. Take A semi-basic HQ (Senior officer, vox if you like them and a heavy weapon) then an infantry platoon with 2 squads and finaly an Armored Fist squad. It's a good, well rounded list and has one tank in it.
Heres an Example:
Infantry Platoon (242)
--2 Grenade Launchers
--Missile Launcher Team
-2 Infantry Squads
--Heavy Bolter Teams
Armored Fist Squad (165)
Heavy Bolter Team
500 points I usually take grenadiers so that I don't have to pick up a armored fist, because IMO they are worthless. then you basically switch the armored fist for some grenadiers, and have some points left to fiddle around with support squads for your HQ
Worthless? As in completely worthless as ogryns or a shooty enginseer squad. I find my own armoured fist squad performs excellently. Why do you dislike them so?Originally Posted by tojo

BAD GANDI! BAD BAD GANDI!
...you should always bring Ld9, weather it be in the form of a HSO or a JO with HI. Senior officers are worthless.
Its the IG, what did you expect. ^_^
I pretty much use a slight variation of Ghandi's list for my own 500pts. Its not that hard really.
And AF squads rock hard.
sorry, i'm on a 13 hours time delay and i just woke up...
i think it would matter if you were 30-90 points over in a 500 point game (that's like 2 extra sentinels or 5 extra xeno riders with lances and carapace armor). why not just play combat patrol? the 500 points regular force ting limits guard down as we tend to like our point-costly (in this case) tanks. and without grenadiers, infantry take up the bulk of a list.
as for armored fist squads, it's possible they won't do too well in a 500 point army (it's really matter of opinion, preference, and what your fighting against), i say this probably because i don't use them, grenadiers make up my mainbody so at best, i have grenadiers in a chimera.
and for the list, looking at your army list in twitchy's clean-up so and so, here's mine. although this was mainly keeping in mind that i thought it would be hilarious to have 2 tanks in a small 500 point game.
hso w/ power weapon, carapace armor
iron discipline, standard bearer
2 grenade launchers
2 grenade launchers
3 heavy bolters
total points 498
all using units you already had put together and without changing their equipment; of course you can always use infantry platoons if you want mass infantry (it would be a base cost of 320 points) or one infantry platoon and one grenadier squad for that fire power, either way, once you've added up all the heavy weapons and special weapons, you won't really have any space for anything else. anyways, that's my input, good luck
reason I don't like armored fist squads:
1 - the chimera is really really overpriced for the amount of fire support it can provide. I could take a group of 3 HB for the 85 points.
2 - the unit inside the chimera is not a sufficient surprise to the enemy when it pops out. one special weapon, one heavy weapon, and a bunch of lasguns hat may or may not be rapid firing? not much of a punch
3 - if the chimera dies or takes any penetrating hit, it can damage the crew inside.
4 - in a 500 point list, this tank is going to be the only tank available for the enemy to shoot at, which means that if they have a strong anti-tank weapon then it's gonna die pretty fast and hurt everything inside of it.
5 - because it can only move as fast as normal infantry if it is going to shoot any of its weapons, and thus is not much of a speed enhancement to your army.
that's my veiw on it at least. anybody is welcome to give me counterpoint, because if I am missing an entirely useable unit of the IG, I would love to know.
1.) Those can still fire on teh move and keep up with your men.
2.) No unit in a transport is a surprise, nobodies going to say, "Look at that Rhino (Wave Serpent, Raider, Devilfish, etc), I'll bet that there aren't any units in there." Transports are for getting the troops accross alive.
3.) Its a risk you run.
4.) In a 500 point list, not many people are likly to have anti tank weapons as they are rather expensive in general)
5.) Then use it as a mobile weapons platform.
