OK I've seen in other threads that the standard configuration most people use with rough riders is to take the laspistol and ccw over the lasgun because you are most likely going to charge people. Then when you drop your lance you can choose to have either a ccw or a pistol (you can't have both coz you can't carry 3 weapons). Most people take the pistol so they can still shoot.
The thing I've just realized is that if you do this you won't be getting the extra attack anyway from the additional ccw so why take the pistol+ccw when you can take the lasgun? You'll still get the same number of attacks with a lasgun in close combat as you would with a pistol, you just can't shoot before you charge again. But if you've already used your lance anyway, why would you want to?
Without the lance you're just a small squad of ordinary guardsmen on horses (or whatever). Why not take the lasguns so that after you've dropped your lances (assuming you survive the combat you used them in) you can fill the role of mounted infantry/annoyance for the enemy/objective takers rather than just commit suicide by charging in with pistols over and over again until all your roughies are dead?
This makes roughies much more versatile. Give one of them a grenade launcher and he can fire it as they charge with the lances for krakking terminators, and then spend the rest of the battle running about fragging people while the other guys shoot their lasguns! They will be reduced in size after their combat so the enemy either has to ignore them or swat them, both of which are good for you.
So how's this for a useful squad?
10 rough riders
lasguns and hunting lances
1 grenade launcher
Vet with power weapon (+honorifica if you feel like it)
Im sorry, but you cannot bring lasguns and hunting lances, as stated in the codex. To be more specific it's on page 46 under the options thingey.
Agh! dammit. My friend has my codex, I spose I shouldn't have posted until I'd checked it. It took me ages to write out that post too
Uh, just pretend I didn't say anything...
No, I modeled shotguns on my rough riders!
Well, I simply have to remove the pump-action thingamajigger from the bottom of a chopped down lasgun and I have a laspistol.
To get a laspistol, chop off the lasgun head thingy (leave the barrel), and the shoulder-rest thing. Voila.
i modelled mine so that their free hand is holding onto the mount with their laspistols in holsters. i know it's not necessary because the mounts 'steer' themselves in combat as said in the faq, but it's a nice look having the guardsmen hunched over gripping onto the reins like they're holding on right during a charge with their lances pointing off towards the enemy.
