I play Space Wolves and until now I've used a mechanised infantry list.
Now I'm considering dropping all the transports in favour of larger squads and a pack of longfangs.
My concern is that I wont be able to reach CC.
Any of you play CC armies with only normal movement?
OK wolves are a hybrid army usually, with long ranged fire support from the split fire long fangs, GH providing a mixed role and BCs assaulting. Between 1500 and 2000 points I would expect to see 2-3 rhinos, principally my reasons are this:
BCs need the transport- they are beserk killers, wandering them up the field on foot will turn them into dead bezerk killers
If you just send up the odd BC rhino it will get picked off easily, so you need several rhinos advancing at the same time in order to get one squad up ther and this will in turn provide cover for the other squads
see? it rather, therefore depends o nthe size of your army and its composition
Right now I'm in a campaign where we use 1250 pts armies. (the others are just starting the hobby and are building their armies)
The thing is that in this size of games 50 pts are alot (58 with the essential armour and smoke upgrades). And I also like the thought of using 10+ blood claws since I then get three Power Fists...
But maybe I sholud stick with the transports...
Having seen your list post...
The thing with vehicles, is this, if you take one, particularly in 1000-1500 points range - it tends to be dead meat as your opponent will have a number of anti tank options and they will all be aiming at it, the alternatives are to take none or many, if you take many, you are vastly impacting your troop numbers.
As a bare minimum for a rhino your should always take extra armour and smoke, so you are paying 58 points for each transport.
If you foot slog it, you are likely to get shot, that said, you can, to a degree return fire, you can also provide covering fire (long fangs being one of the top HS choices in the game
so.. a nice alternative would be consider 13th company, the rune priest then comes into his own.
by taking a ven dread as a HQ you suppliment your vehicles without detracting ffrom numbers (you were probably gonna pay that much for a HQ anyway) and that thing can draw fire and still keep comming
IF I wanted transports in 1250 points of wolves, I would want a ven dread HQ and 2 rhinos, since one GH squad is mandatory, I would take a BC squad on 9 in a rhino with the WGBL as the second HQ,
IF I could squeeze the points I would take a second BC squad of 10 in a rhino, and a small GH squad on foot, otherwise the GH would be in a rhino too
