My friend works for GW and he's been trying real hard to get me to start playing, so I decided to try out a small Witch Hunter's army (Canoness and 2 SoB squads) to test things out. Haven't played a game yet, but I do have a few models on the painting table. I've been browsing your site for a while now, and I've already gotten a lot of great information. I've finally decided to join up so I can ask a few questions. Here goes...
The rulebook is kind of vague on the use of grenades. Are frags only used in the attack phase for raising init to 10? And lots of people mention melta bombs are good on seraphims for tank hunting...but nowhere in the rulebook is there mention of HOW melta bombs are used.
The other thing I've been wrestling with is the CC troops. Sisters are pretty weak with their S3/T3, and their CC units really dont look that good on paper. Repentias look cool, but they only get one attack at S3(6) each (What's that S3(6) all about?). A bit expensive for such a woosie hit. Arco-flaggelants are a cool idea, but they only come in squads of 6, and they need to be activated (Whatever THAT means). The D6 attacks is definitely a plus though. Penitent engines are cool too, but many people seem to dislike them on these forums though I have trouble finding out why. I also thought about grey knights as allies...but they're not WH! (can you tell I can get a bit obsessive with things?)
Well, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm gonna go read my ruleboock/codex some more...er I mean I'm going to go out with my "popular" friends and party!!! hehehe
Well I'm no expert on WH but I can help you out.
The rules for using grenades against vehicles are on page 72 of the rulebook.
Now as for CC troops... I can't stress enough how bad sisters repentia are, their low toughness and armor save combined with only 1 attack which strikes last in combat makes them extremely ineffective. Penitent engines and arcos are very cool, I would recommend a max size unit of one of these (depending on how large a game you're playing) if you want to go into close combat. Penitents have their problems but I believe they can still be effective. When people talk about activating arco flagellants they mean using the combat drugs. The best way I've heard of using them is holding them back until your enemy gets near enough, pump them full of drugs and let 'em loose.
The other thing you'll have to worry about is anti-tank, a exrocist or 2 never goes astray and seraphim with melta bombs wil help.
"You challenge me knowing that I am Xiahou Dun!?"
Hopefully someone else doesn't beat me while I'm doing this. First of all, welcome to LO and to the hobby - Witch Hunters are a fine choice. ^_^No - frags can be used in the assault phase, page 39 of the Rulebook. However, they can also be used against vehicles, as detailed on page 72 of the Rulebook.Originally Posted by AsharothPage 72 of the Rulebook, under GRENADES.Originally Posted by AsharothThe Repentia are armed with Eviscerators, which act as Power Fists. They are detailed in the Witch Hunters armoury, I believe. The (6) is their amplfied strength characteristic, when using the Eviscerators.Originally Posted by Asharoth
Witch Hunters aren't meant to be a heavy-hitting CC force - the Daemonhunters are much more proficient at this. However, they excel at close-quarters shooting. Never disregard a unit, such as the Penitent Engines, just because some people on these forums don't like them - because I can tell you that there are always those who do. ^_^
Good luck with the army!
Don't let the hope abandon you - Emperor is watching over us! We shall conquer all!
And on the side note - chose a force that you will LOVE to play and paint, not one that will help you win, cause you will hate every minute of it... That's why I started with the WH myself
Hey Thanks for the information guys! Hmmm must have missed that grenades section under vehicles
dont worry about it, even us vet players dont know everything about everything (so some seem to think they do)
I like repentia sisters myself and intend to have a unit of them to go with my Pentient and Arco flaglents. If you like them, then take them, they will do well against some things not so well against other things.
Pentients in my opinion have two purposes
the are strong and lethal in combat (with good dice rolls for ATCS)
people are scared of them which means they attract lascannons and rail guns which means thsoe guns arnt going at you exorcists, rhinos and immolaters, so whilst there armour is not great and a solid lascannon hit could well take one down there is a chance they will get into combat and tie things up
plus you can hide things behind them,
i suggest you take sister squads of twelve or more as if you get of the act of faith that gives you AP1 on 6s there is a good chance of passing it as you have to roll uncer the squad size (just beware of double 6)
Not much i can say about Nades then what has already been said the only advice i can give in regard to playing sisters is never under estimate your Acts of Faith a heavy flamer and rapid firing bolters with this can make a real mess of terminators (devine guidance), always take a 10 woman squad for your retributors helps alot with Devine Guidance rolls for your heavy bolters, every shooting unit should have an auspex at 2 points its just to cheap not to have and the benefits are astounding, and never count out inquisitors thats 3 elite slots that can be filled with another 9 heavy bolters
Impotant to note about grenades that regardless of the number of attacks a model has, it only gets ONE attack against a vehicle with grenades.
Another is that it still has to roll the "to-hit" against it (not moved = automatic, etc).
Meaning if you had a squad of 10 guys (er, gals) with meltabombs and you are trying to assault a veh that moved more thatn 6" you have to roll a 6 to hit, and you only get 10 rolls.
Welcome to witch hunters, enjoy the army and the fact that us witch hunter players are a rare breed as very few play WH.
As for repentias, they are actually quite effective, but only if they are joined by a priest. equip the priest with a power weapon and him and the mistress can make things easier for the repentia. And when charging getting to re-roll all misses is spectacular. Note: This is about the only unit a priest is good attached with, never attach him to anything else.
Repentias aren't the only ones who carry Eviscerators.
A priest himself can take an Evis, add to that a Celestian squad, plus, a Cannoness with Evis, and you have a lotta smack for a very reasonable price. I think you can even toss in one or two Inquisitors (though I can't recall if an Inquis can carry an Evis).
That is a fiesty setup that a ot of people overlook.
Very solid & effective.
