Ok, I've started not too long ago, just got my 2nd squad of normal space marines (the pack that comes with 5), I still got to get my codex and rulebook, but I've ordered for my codex so thats taken care of, anyways I'll just post my little list of what I got, tell me which direction I should expand into. I'm not really any chapter yet.
1 Chaplain with a bolt pistol
11 Space Marines
2 un-usable [Don't have some parts, one doesn't have a bolter or backpack, and the other is missing a backpack, they would both be just normal bolter dudes.]
1 SM w/rocket launcher
2 SM w/flamer
7 SM w/bolters
I would get more marines, at least 10-15 more, then when you get your codex read about the different units and their rules and decide if you want to play shooty, assaulty, or a mix of both.
One Shot, One Kill
buy a tactical squad box, and they should give you a few extra back packs, and bolters. then buy a couple of lascannon dudes, and plsama/melta guns spures(unless you play SW or BTs Or buy those suprese, they will already come with melta/plsama guns.) Then pick up a 10 man asault squad, 2 with plasma guns1 sgt, with powerfist, give your chaplain a jump pack, that will give you a nice little army to start with.
convert the flamers, to melta guns, buy cutting off the fire holder, and sticking it on the side, then it looks pretty close to a melta gun. Flamers are worthless in tactical squads. Evenutally, pick up 3 more MLS, and creat a 4 missle luancher, 4 bolter dev squad.
*gasp* WORTHLESS? PFF!
No, lol. Flamers are fine in TAC squads, IMHO.
Yeah, adding more Tactical Marines is good, as well as an Assualt Squad, and maybe a Land Speeder Tornado or Deadnought. Both are very nice units and will help your army quite a bit.
In my first game, I found flamers quite useful. Thanks for all advice though, keep posting, all because I'm not posting that much doesn't mean that I'm not considering your advice.
should get a powerfist srg or 3.
maybee a predetor. i think that dreadnaoughts are a must assault marines to! they kick ass! put a jump pack on the chaplain to!
Ok, so I should spend some money to get a Dread (was gonna get one anyways, I <3 em), assualt marines, expand the normal space marines, and possibly some heavy support to back em up.
e/AKA so basically buy more of everything.
In essence, yes.
I'd get some tactical squads over the combat squads, they're $10 more I think and you get 10 guys and bitz. If you decide to use the the trait "take the fight to them" you can get bolt pistol and chainsword marines from the space wolves blood claw box for sure or possibly some of the black templar stuff.
Once you get your codex look around for things that you like and check out the traits section. The traits will more or less allow you tailor a space marine army to your play style.
Overall I'd get some more infantry (make 4 missile launcher guys and 4 bolter guys and you have a devastator squad ), a landspeeder tornado (you'll want to get more later most likely), an assault squad or two (most people field them in 10 man squads, 5 men per box I think), and then you can't really go wrong with an all purpose tank. What I mean by that is get like say a predator and magnetize everything and order some bitz so you can make a predator/rhino/vindicator/whirlwind.
Before you buy anything else though I'd reccomend looking through the codex when you getting and playing some 40k in 40minutes, combat patrols, or around 500 point ish battles to allow you to get a feel for things and to try things out and then expand from that basic list with units that you want.
edit: One more thing I forgot to add, the megaforce and battleforce are pretty decent deals and you can use the "command squad" as normal infantry or make veteran sargeants out of them or whatever you want and they have some cool bitz. The razorback can also be used as a rhino, so don't glue down the weapons.
Make sure to check out the tactica too as they are really helpful.

I can read now!
Ok well you definately gotta get your hands on another tactical squad.
Then you have to work out which type of style you like and how you want to play( assaulty, very good at shooting, balanced, very fast, defensive etc).
Then once you have worked out how you want to play then you can expand your army to suit your style of play.
SO have you got a idea of how you want your army to be and what you want them to be good at?
