i have some homework for ig veterans who wouldn't mind lending a hand.
i have a friend that wants to start ig as his first 40k army and as a nid player who hasen't played against ig nor with ig i can't say i can help him too much on the technical side.
this is what he is looking at:
hq= 1x boxed hq
elite= 2x karsikan squads
troops= 4x shock troops with vet. seargant aand 6x heavy weapons sets
heavy= 1 basalisk w/ pentle heavy stubber(?) and 2x leman russ with extra armour and hunter killer missiles.
so he is looking for an army where he can sit back and shoot but will also have strong enough cc like karsikans to do a finishing sweep. my main concern is the 1hq.
basicall if you have suggestions of how he should change this, how to equip everything etc. it would be greatly appreciated. he would also maybe like to replce 1 or 2 or maybe even 3 shock troop regiments for storm troopers. suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.
Unless he's gonna be suing the grenadiers doctrine, then he will have to use an infantry platoon and either another infantry platoon, a conscript squad, or an armoured fist squad for his first two troop choices.
He's got a solid heavy support section that will easily be the bane of your army unless you play all big guys. Those kasrkins are gonna be hell on your biggest units, with 2 assault weapons they are taking off upwards of 2 wounds if the dice gods are on their sides.
IG hq's are nothing special, like all command squads in the IG armies they get the option of having all 5 men using a weapon other than a lasgun, or laspistol and close combat weapon, but they die just as easily. When your friend is making his list, tell him to take a junior officer with the honorifica imperialis as his commander. This gives the JO the stats of a heroic senior officer but 5 pts cheaper...

Kasrkins aren't any better then anybody else in close combat. Kas have the same ws are a run of the mill guardsmenso he is looking for an army where he can sit back and shoot but will also have strong enough cc like karsikans to do a finishing sweep.
there are very few cc oriented parts of the IG army, except maybe Rough Riders and Ogryns, and if you so choose, sufficiently upgraded officers. Although the sheer numbers of an IG platoon can see them through some pretty nasty close combat. If it comes down to a war of attrition, guards will win.
but yeah, get the codex to look around, that's probably the best bet

power weapon on the officer in a kasrkin squad can make quite a difference. Plus you can almost count rapid-firing as cc, and kasrkin do that about 100 times better than guardsmen
Actually, tojo, kasrkin are only about 25% better at rapid firing then guardsmen, and that extra AP value on the hellguns doesnt really amount to much. A power weapon Vet. Serg in a squad of kasrkin also isnt likley to do much, maybe one or two MEQ kills if your luckey.
Tell him not to buy the HQ box.Waste of money.
While the models are pretty spiffey, you really wont be using one or two of them, and you also have to pay $35 for it...you can get a box of troops and convert a Command platton officer and retinue and an Infantry Platoon officer and retinue and have a squad of guardsmen left over to do what you want with.
