i have a couple of questions how exzactly do u make hardened verterans are they just like guardsmen painted differently? and are they useful? because i'm planning on haveing a couple of squads of them as elite choice with the veterans doctrine.
Well, you can paint guardsmen differently and call them Hardened Veterans, but you should also add extra bits and whatnot to veterens, i.e. knives, ammo pouches, grenades, Heavy Weapon bakcpacks, spare heads, e.t.c.
They are pretty useful, as they have improved BS over normal guardsmen and can take 3 special weapons and a heavy weapon in each squad. They can also infiltrate for free and are reasonably cheap compared to other Armys Elite choices.
Just dont expect them to last long; they die as easy as normal guardsmen...
There are no actual veteren models so you can make them look like what everyou want as long as they are mostly human looking. For example you could give them all marine torsos or something just as wacky.
As for my veterens, I made them look very similar paint wise and conversion wise, nothing that stands out too much. Veterens are a good unit and you don't want them to stick out and draw extra fire. However I believe many people make them stick out as much as possible to look cool, so it's really up to you whether their paint scheme and and modelling process is the same as that of the regular troops in your army.
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
I use cadian models for my troops and catachan models for veterans.
Yes they can be really useful, if they manage to shoot first.
I believe veterans are IG's best elite units. They trade the extra survivability of stormtroopers for a sick amount of BS4 firepower. (3 deep striking plasma guns or melta guns anyone?) But why the hell would you be worried about survivability? You're Guard! SHOOT EM DEAD!
personally, i track unit numbers (on model shoulderpads)... with the lowest unit being my veterans...
Pictures of the Smigs Army for your amusement....

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
As everyone else said, there are no actual models. But there i one nice way to make them, and this is to use regular guardsmen and give them all backpacks from the hvy weapons sprue. Then in addition i would recomend some alternate helmet colouring as well.
As for using them in combat, I would recomend having 3 Grenade launchers and a missile launcher. This will make them an excellent firebase unit.
Plasmas and meltas are nice, but if u really want a suicide deep strike squad just take a platoon command squad with 4 meltas
Another cool option u might want to try is a J.O w/ plasma pistol plus 3 guardsmen wih plasmas and then also a medic
Anyways... back on topid...
As for what NOT to do with Veterans, I would say do not give them laspistol/ccw and no flamers. That would just waste their BS.
i dont paint my veterans in a different scheme to my regular guardsmen, as the BS4 and three special weapons only means that they earn a quick increase on my opponents priority list, and making them stand out makes that even worse
Mine is the opposity of Herman Morr's. My Catachans which I started out with, are regular, andmy better painted Cadians are my Vets.
Vets is probably the best Elite choice to take, I highly recommend it. Lascannon, three Plasma guns, OOOOHOOOOOOOH, that is as much Chease as we can get. Oh ya,......Drop those Termies, OH Yaa........

Catachans and Cadians seems to be a popular distinction.
The troops in my Inquisitorial Guard are Cadians, while the Vets are Catachans w/some gold details on their weapons.
Not so much the gritty hardened vet as the honored and decorated veteran.
I think the Lascannon and 3 Plasmas would make them stand out enough,so I'm not too worried about them being singled out for their paintjob.
