Not sure exactly where this thread should fit. I did a search, but...
I'm wondering if they should vary the cost of master crafting. Specifically on the type of weapon master crafted. I'm not talking about varying the cost of any CCW master crafting, that's always useful, and probably worth the 15pts in most situations, except maybe on a power weapon in the hands of some imperial guard veteran sergeant.
Specifically I'm referring to master crafting on ranged weapons. I can see paying 15pts to master craft a plasma pistol, and while I'm not sure if you can master craft inferno pistols, I would be willing to pay the points for that. However, fluffwise, the most widely manufactured arms in the Imperium are: lasguns, laspistols, hellguns, hellpistols, boltguns, bolt pistols ect.(Feel free to tell me that heavy bolters are more common than hellguns or whatever, but I'm guessing you see my point.) As such, they'd be the most likely candidates for extra care being lavished upon them by some techpriest or other artificer.
So logically, master crafted laspistols, bolt pistols etc., should be the most common...
However, other than on special characters where you have to take them, or in the armies of devoted fluff fanatics, you will never find such an item. And there are such a wide range of Imperial IC and unit leader models that appear to carry just such a weapon.
So, in the interests of WYSIWYG, fluff and my cheesy desire to have more master crafted guns in my lists, I'm suggesting that the cost for mastercrafting ranged weapons should be lowered. Perhaps you should just pay the cost for the weapon again? For plasma pistols this would typically work out:15pts base cost, +15 pts for master crafting? However, only paying 1pt to mastercraft a lasgun seems a bit low. Probably all that its worth, but that's not the point. Make the cost that low and everyone takes one, which is again unfluffy. Perhaps paying 5pts to mastercraft a Str3 weapon, and 10pts to mastercraft a Str4 weapon? Now that seems too high. I know that I still wouldn't want to pay that much. Anyone have any thoughts?
I see the common most weapons being master crafted less often that the more rare ones. Whats the point in master crafting a lasgun for a IG Lt. When you could MC a Captains Plasma pistol.
It could be cheaper but that would be hugely over complicated for an option few players (especialy on LO) take.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Yes, but you might well guess that master crafting these simpler weapons would be easier for the mechanically inclined. Certainly, the only master crafted ranged weapons that come to mind on special characters are Cyphers master crafted bolt pistol, and twin master crafted hellguns on a certain IG character. As for the complexity, I'd like to come up with a simple answer, which is why I am posting here.
Ranged weapons would be mass produced, I don't think there is a mass production master crafted ranged weapon factory, rather they're probably done by hand or something like that.
Tactically speaking you'll only get a couple shots off with a ranged weapon if you're lucky, while in assault you get more attacks from one round of fighting. Keeping that in mind and that 40k is assault oriented it makes more sense to master craft something like a power sword. But terminator honours gives you an extra attack and it's the same cost, most people choose the honours. Plus master crafting is the same cost as a marine, I'd rather have another body than one reroll. Unless of course you took lightning claws.
The old edition emperor's champion had a master crafted bolt pistol which always made me sad, I mean why can't the black sword be master crafted? That was always somewhat frustrating to me.
I can read now!
yeah. master crafting was cool.
I know for in the old days, mastercrafting a bolt pistol, effectively made it a bolter targeter and an extra attack!
got to love those old combo's.
The best one I've seen in the new days however is the gun that half of my ENTIRE Wolf Guard carries. It's the master-crafted combi-plasma.
you have a bolter, with the true grit, effectivily makes it a bolt pistol for close combat purposes, which can reroll to hit when shooting.
you can ALSO fire it as a Plasma gun, which gives you 2 shots in 12" which you can reroll to hit.
I know less weapons other than this one that ALWAYS earns it points back.
but then again, I play against marines
But yeah, I would love to see the points for master crafting ccw as 15 and ranged weapons as 10. Why 10?
for one thing, 15 is the cost of a frikkin marine with a bolter, no need to reroll 1 shot, if you can get 2 more for the same price.
2x cost is to low, 2 points for a re-roll shooting gun, is FAR too unbelievable, it's like buying marines for 5 points.
10 is a good way in between, it doesn't make everyone buy that re-roll since they they can do without, and 10 points is respectively much. however, if someone likes the idea of mastercrafting a gun (for fluff/powergaming/whatever purposes) don't stop them, they are not going to be ripped of after buying it.
So far for my two coins
