Now that my Tau army is at least all in my hands, although very little of it actually ready to go, I've been giving thought to a secondary army. At first, I planned on having that army be Imperial Guard. However, I've been doing some thinking on the subject, and realized that the Guard army I'd play would be just like my Tau army, just with slower tanks and Lascannons.
Plus, playing Guard and Tau can give you a permanent distaste towards close combat. I'm sick of muttering 'Crap, they're boned.' whenever one of my squads gets into close combat.
So, the obvious choice is to play a CC army. That gave me 4 choices-Tyranids, Orks, World Eaters and Space Wolves. Tyranids are out...well, because they're Tyranids. Too gribbly for me, and I hate painting flesh. Which kinda knocks the Orks out, too, plus the fact that so many of their models stink. Maybe if they had a new codex. Not a fan of Chaos outside the Iron Warriors, which leaves me with the Space Wolves.
Plus, they're so badass. I mean, they still use the Legion, as opposed to the Chapter.
Anyways, I've got some questions:
1: What's a good way to start a Wolves army?
2: What are some general tactics and whatnot for playing Wolves?
3: Can a Space Wolf army be competitive, or are they more gimmick?
4: Are they reasonably easy to paint? I might use a slightly different scheme, but it'll probably still be largely Space Wolves Grey.
Also, any general advice on anything SW-related, be it tactics, modelling, whatever, is great.
Burn the land and boil the sea. You can't take the sky from me.
Member of the Canadian Clan, eh.
Mech Tau Cadre: 2000 points, needs paint and magnets.
Paladins of Avalon (SW):-1500 points, needs paint.
the space wolves army are amazing they are very effective at killing alot of the other race choices in the game
some good things
1. wolf scouts
2. the leman russ exterminator
3. WOLF GAURD WOLF GAURD WOLF GAURD
Land Speeders. They may not look awesome, but people under estimate them, unitl they destroy thier land riader first turn
Have wolf guard with a power weapon of some description and a wolf tooth necklace for any squad that can have them (except scouts). They prod some serious buttock.
scouts are good. coming in from behind the enemy with a melta gun is to good to pass up.
As for getting started, get some Grey Hunters you need at least 1 squad, so get them first.
Try an easier grey then Space Wolves, I use codex grey (like on the cover of the dex) and it looks fine. You can dry brush marines easily so it doesnt get much better than that
Only a few prefer liberty - the majority seek nothing more than fair masters
Have you considered 13th company?
... only triumph could turn pooing his pants into a good thing..
I love the spacewolves, My two armies are Tyranid and Daemonhunters (so you know my tastes), and my brother plays the spacewolves and the variability you get in each squad is awesome, as well as the ability to drive around in rhinos and rapid fire people, only for them to realize that if they charge you they are screwed because all of your guys are going to be in the combat, they all get two attacks, oh and there are lots of power weapons.
They only thing I do not like about the space wolves are the longfang packs. they cost the same as an eight man devastator squad, but only have 5 wounds and only one of the comes before you have to take off your heavy weapons.
So all I can say is go for it, and enjoy them along the way.
