    Honour Guard

What is the best way to use the honour guard? I was thinking they be added individually to a cc orientated tactical squad, leaving a squad with 1 Sergeant with powerfist, Honour Guard model, Meltagun, and 7 normal guys. They seem to expensive for a command squad, though, especially with the Ancient and Champion, although they do have good stats.
I am set on using the honour guard however, as even if they may not be the best choice, I am fed up with complaints about space marine players and want to collect an Ultramarines army properly.
So basically, do Honour Guard command squads work, or should I stick them in tactical squads destined for close combat?

The Imperial Guard is like a punchbag - No matter how hard you hit it, it'll always be ready for a fight.

Vcitory for the Imperial Guard comes about through the sacrifice of our men, not through the cowardly survival tricks of other armies.

Yeah the honor gaurd are really expensive and even if they do get into cc they cant save the entire sqaud but it thnk the best way to use them is as a small strike force with maybe a character co characterhunting by giveing them a librarian if you are playing the right opponet.

Honor gaurds are for blood angles, are you taking about them? or are you talking about space marine command squads? Command squads should not be over built, simply take a sgt with powerfist, pick a skill, either infilrate or furious charge, the latter in most cases, then give 7 models bolt pistols + ccws, 1 melta gun, 1 company champoin. Unless your drop podding, remove one normal model, so that your charactor can fit inside the drop pod. Also take frag grenades.

    I wouldnt take anything else.

I was talking about the Ultramarines Honour Guard, the special unit, the one on p51 of the codex, and whether they function best used as a command squad or attached to normal squads, as per their rules.

They function best as a painted squad on display.

Just suck it up and play the 580pt squad in a D-Pod w/ Marneus. Though only in like 3,000pts+. Maybe in a regular D-pod squad as well, just for the extra PW.
    Take life seriously, its lethal.

They seem to look good stat wise and there weopons seem good, able to hace power weopons. Expansive, nice models i would just use them with marneus in 3000 point battles. Or for another ultra hero!

I wouldnt use them as a command squad, but they do make excellent additions to close combat orientated tactical squads. A friend of mine uses an ultramarine drop pod army and he does this exact thing. It is quite effective.

Efficiency VS Point Cost VS Ease Of Use - Your best bets:

    1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant

    2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers

    3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
