hello all, i'm thinking of starting with warhammer 40k and a space marines Raven Guard army. I was just wondering The raven guard a notorieus for their strikes in deep enemy terretorie, why don't they heve the See but don't be seen rule.? why? they are famous for their infiltration and disruption.
Plwase help me out. I don't know which chapter i want to play now anymore.
Well, they trade that for a squad that assaults first turn, with like 10 lightening claw models, hard to beat that.
Also, for the same cost you as tactical marines with infilrate you can field veterans, simply take 2 90 point lascannon squads, or 2 10 man 1 melta gun 1 sgt powerfist squad with CCW and BPS with a drop pod, however the first optoin is better, because it saves you drop pods, and gives you first turn fire support. Just dont forget about your veterans, thats what they are their for. You can have 30 of those dudes infilrate, if you need more take a chaplain and infrilate him up 2. YOud be hardpressed to fit much more into 1500 points.
Well, the Raven Guard is also known for popping in out of nowhere and ripping things apart in close combat.
Case in point - Kayvaan Shrike and Shrike's Wing. As FITFOW said, it's a 10 man assault squad with Lightning Claws, Infiltrate, Scout, and Stealth. You're looking at 42 Lightning Claw hits in one strike, which will easily obliterate pretty nearly anything in the game, and I do mean ANYTHING. To top it off, Shrike's Master Crafted, Rending Lightning claws were built by Corax (their Primarch) himself - kinda telling that their Primarch favoured close combat weapons, right?
Also, to continue the lightning assault theme, you can take Furious charge on any Tactical or Assault squad for 3 points per model, and you can take Assault squads with mandatory Furious charge as Elites. That's up to 6 seriously hardcore Assault squads in an army, and if you add a suitably equipped Librarian or Chaplain with a Jump pack, the close combat pain just keeps getting sweeter. Furious charge can make these squads insanely powerful, with [S5 I5] marines and a Sergeant with a [S9] Powerfist! Also, it can boost an attached Librarian to a psychotic Initiative 7 if he has a familiar! Take Might of heroes as well and he'll pump out 7 to 9 [S5 I7] Force Weapon hits at [WS5]! Back that up with 27 [S5] conventional hits and 4 [S9] Powerfist hits..... If that ain't damn scary, I don't know what is.
Actually, now that I dig out my copy of Index Astartes 4, The Raven Guard, contrary to popular belief, are not a stealthy, covert force so much as they are an extremely mobile rapid reaction force. They don't use heavy battle tanks (Land Raider Crusader, Annihilator pattern Predators), and can only use 1 other tank, picked from standard Land Raider, Destructor pattern Predator, Whirlwind or Vindicator. They tend to rely heavily on Scouts and Assault squads, and when they deploy Tactical squads and Dreadnoughts, they usually ride a Drop Pod. Overall, a force that can easily and swiftly redeploy to put their resources to best use against different enemies.
I'd definitely reccommend the Raven Guard for a new SM army. They're not so different from standard SM armies to need special tactics, and in my experience, they'll match even such famed assault oriented armies as Black Templars and Blood Angels blow for blow. Plus, all that black power armor just looks sinister on the tabletop once it's all painted up.
Oh, one more thing: This is totally unofficial, based solely on army fluff, but the Raven Guard has their own version of the Wulfen called the Weregeld. These killing machines (Accidentally created through risky fast development procedures used to quickly produce new Marines after massive losses during the Horus Heresy) intervened when the Space Wolves couldn't crack an Iron Warriors fortress after 100 days, ate nearly all of the Iron warriors for lunch in just one day, and scared the Space Wolves so badly they wouldn't talk about it outside of the Fang. Impressive, huh?
