I would suggest converting a Predator turret to mount a battlecannon and using a chimera chassis isnetad of the normal leman russ chassis.
I have heard a lot of people elsewere do this a lot, the first thing you have to do is shorten the tank they are longer than they are tall, by far, then you have to make the top bigger this can be done by simply constructing a new turrnet and just put the old one inside it. as for the boddy i sugest you use plasticard to cover the tracks saw it in half then make a new set of tracks. you should realize that the cannon wont look right on this model. In comparison with the tank the cannon is actually quite small, so you should probably tone the battle cannon down a little bit.

yeah use a diffrent chassis and use a predetor turret also you will have to lose the side sponsoons to make it look more modren
so essentially, the Leman Russ "modern" conversion, doesn't use the Leman Russ at all?
rather amusing when it comes down to it

Essentially, yes, since the Russ looks nothing like the Abrams except well....its a tank, and its got a gun. The similarities end around there. 40K Imperial vehicles tend to favor more towards WWI style tanks, rather than WWII or later vehicles.
