If you want to play a deathwing army does it have to be Dark Angels?
Yeah... I'm not sure where you're coming from either. The Dark Angels have a first company of veterans like every other chapter but their's is called the DeathWing. They used to wear black like all the Dark Angels (used to) but painted their suits white after letting a recruiting world fall to a genestealer cult.
If you mean can you take an all terminator army using the rules for deathwing but actually use another chapter? Sure, why not. I love coming across armies like that at tournaments.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Deathwing is the name for the Dark Angels 1st Company.
To do the bidding of the god of decay death and corruption is to be rid of all things that makes you weak only in return for the control of your soul!
You don't have to use the models though. One of the mods on The WAAAGH has a Deffwing army that's made up entirely of orks in power armour. I'll have to see if I can find some pictures...
"Some days you're the Mekboy building the kannon, the rest you're the grot being blown up by it."
- Quote attributed to Sorkrates, before his much mourned death due to ingestion of Hemsquig Juice.
"Dis iz my choppa, and herez me gun. Dat's for killin' and so'z dis one!"
- Bloodaxe Kommando Warchant
no you do not have to use dark angels.
you have to use the dark angels RULES...not the dark angels themselves...you could easily devise your own colour scheme and background for your chapter as a successor to the dark angels and them use the dark angels rules for your own chapter
you may not however mix rules...if you want to use deathwing in a blood angels army for instance you are breaking the rules...but as long as you use the dark angel rule and no other you are fine
hope this helps
