I've been considering conscripting (I play Eldar already), and was wondering about my choices. I think I want to go all infantry.
For doctrines I was considering: Heavy Weapon Platoons, Special Weapon Squads, Carapace armor, close order drill and maybe sharp shooters.
I'm wanting to go heavy on Heavy Bolters, Las Cannons, and Plasma guns.
Does this sound like it would be moderately effective, and would sharp shooters be worth it if I go heavy on plasma guns?
After reading up it seems Carapce armor is generally considered not worth it's points. My friends and I generally play with scarce terrain and one of my opponents will be Tau.

Everything I have told you, even this, is a lie.
When you say conscripting, do you mean you're considering starting an IG army? Or, inducting them or something? Sorry if the vocab goes over my little head.
But as for your doctrines, they look good except that sharpshooters doesn't apply to plasmaguns (they still just overheat on the 1). But it's a good doctrine for heavy bolters or other special weapons squads, so just make sure you put it in the most effective squad.
And I'm not very experienced with carapace. Generally I find that keeping our guard as cheap as possible is key. Buy maybe a mix of well-armored/not-armored squads? I'll leave that question to more experienced players.
I've never played Tau so I don't know what they got, but HB's are a good all-purpose horde-killer, and lascannons are also a trusty favorite. And I personally go exclusively with plasma when I'm fighting MEQ's.
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
looks like good doctrines for an all infantry list, however-
Veterans are the best IG foot troop there is- take them, take them, take them. Oh and take veterans with 3xplamsa and 1x lascannon and give them carapace armor or plunk them in cover to they don't die so easily. That will ruin anyone's day.
You can do this, or if you want a good anti-tank squad, you can take veterans with 3xmeltas and deepstrike them behind some tanks for a good suicide tank kill teamOriginally Posted by ^Heavy Support^
Veterans can't deep strike :pOriginally Posted by BeakeR
However if you do that with a 5-man squad of Storm Troopers it is effective.
Veterans can infiltrate if mission permits though... im not sure if its the same thing lol
vets are amazin w/ a las cannon. For the rest of your men stock up on heavy bolters, auto cannons, and missles, las cannons ain't really worth it unless your going up against a fair amount of 2+ saves or Av13+ tanks. Figure each guardsmen should get about 3-4 hits a game, against an army like the tau 1 or 2 las cannons will be all it takes to get the job done. If those dont work the sheer amount of auto cannon or heavy bolter fire you can potentailly dish out in one turn will cause anything in his army to fall over, even those pesky little broad side. More is always better.
As for your doctines carapace is ok, costly but it will keep you alive for a couple more turns, i aint to found of special weapon squads, you need to get way to close to make up their point cost, and they can't take a bloody chimera! More often not they tend to be a point sink. Swap the special weapons doctinre out for more vets, again more is better.
Rheagar fought nobly
Rheagar fought valiantly
Rheagar fought honorably
And Rheagar died.
I agree, the best policy for Veterans is to use them as a firebase. Infiltrate is a nice ability, but IMHO with only 5+ armour they are far too weak to be pushing forward.
Heavy weapons squads are a fair unit, but they go down very easliy, so they need to be kept well protected. When I write lists, I always put the cheaper heavy weapons in the HW squads. Ie. Missile Launchers only in anti-tank squads and Heavy Bolters in fire support squads.
By keeping the Lascannons and Autocannons mixed in with infantry you give them a 9-man redundancy.
Even with cheap HWs, a squad is still a painful loss (almost 100pts), so try to keep them in cover. Some people favour Cameleoline, giving a +1 cover save. But 10pts is a bit pricey for 6 men, and special equipment must be taken by all infantry squads, so this is best used in a Grenadier army, where HW squads stick out like a sore thumb.
If taking the drop troops doctrine, Veterans can actually deepstrike as long as the mission permits. Therefore a 5 man 3 meltagun deepstriking squad of vets is an even more effective anti tank option than a 5 man deepstriking squad of stormtroopers. Same points, same BS, but one additional meltagun. I know what option I'd take.Originally Posted by Xethemez
I would say take one regular platoon of Infantry than go Conscripts all the way.
