For the Christmas Sale at my shop I was planning on buying either a Vindicator and Predator or 2 Preds. Which do you guys think would be a better investment?
BTW, this is for a BT army. Also, I already own a LRC and will be getting a Dreadnaught as well.
We are space marines we don't need any stinking tanks!
go with the vindi and the pred
What about another Dread instead?
Yes, I know, I'm a poet and don't know it, make a rhyme every time.
Actually, Black Templars do need tanks. We don't get Devastator squads, so all of our Heavy Support choices are tanks. Although I suppose a trio of Dreadnoughts could provide some pretty solid anti-tank if you don't need the Elite slots for anything else.Originally Posted by lighthorse19
I haven't played with armor enough to give you any good advice in terms of what to buy. All I can say is remember that the Vindicator is on the old Rhino chasis and will look fairly out of date. If you don't care (or are willing to put the Vindicator plates on a Rhino) this isn't an issue. Figured I could address your question a little bit since I was posting already.
I suppose it depends on how you outfit the Dread. I've never fielded a CC dread yet so my experince is limited but I found that my TLLas Pred with Las sponsons (it was built for 3rd Ed) survives about as often or even more so as the Ven Dread with TLLas/ML and Tank Hunter. If my opponent can gank the turret he generally leaves it alone. Likewise if the TLLas arm gets destroyed the Dread is no longer his first priority.
I'd get the Pred/Vind combo, more variety.

I would go for two predators, it's more flexible. TL lascannons and heavy bolters give you a flexible and mobile set up, which is ideal for escalation and providing covering fire to a general advance.
With an army like BTs, I would suggest staying away from the vindi - as your army closes it gets increasingly risky to use the big cannon due to your own troops having the potential to get caught in the blast, and anything outside of your line of advance is also likely to be outside of its range.
One weapon destroyed result can really spoil a vindi's day, too...
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone

If you do have your heart set on getting a vindicator you might wait till later in this next year. Rumor has it that whenever the new DA are produced we will also see a new vindi model, which apparently could be as early as February. (Though summer seems more reasonable.)
I'd recommend 2 predators, probably best fully decked out with lascannons.
Vindicators are usually good, but for SM armies taking a static approach against a nasty oncoming hand to hand foe (Blood Angels, World Eaters, Tyranids etc). Seeing as Black Templar don't generally fight static, I'd recommend against the Vindicators.
I'd take 2 lascannon predators, and use them in leiu of Devastator squads as your long range anti-tank support. Alternatively if your having some horde problems and want to splat about a few Orks/IG/Eldar/whatever, take the exterminator with Heavy Bolter sponsons. I've always been against mixing and matching with your wargear, i.e. anti-tank turret and anti-infantry sponsons, or vice versa. E.g. take this for an example. You are fighting IG and have a lascannon turret and heavy bolter sponsons. You fire at a Leman Russ in front of you. The heavy bolters sponsons are completely wasted. Alternatively you fire at an IG squad in front of you. The Lascannon turret is now just expensive overkill. I find it best to focus your vehicles in one direction and be purely anti-tank or anti-infantry, rather than average at all trades and good at none.
I guess I'll do the 2 preds. BTW, my Dread will have LC, ML, EA, and Venerable. Thanks for all your help
Like everyone else, I think you should go with 2 Preds, But I dont think its worth giving them the extra LasCannons on sponson mounts. Being able to move is pretty important, espically with thin side armor, and those HB's give you something to do other than kill 3 nids a turn If you really gotta have the 4 LC's then it might be worth getting th PotMS upgrade.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
