Look, I know everyone here likes SM, but allow me to expound on some reasons why I love SM so very, very much.
1 ) Toughness - How cool is it that our basic trooper is as tough as an Ogryn? Granted, we pay a premium in points, but our basic guy is among the toughest non-robots out there. Furthermore (as if the Emperor was giving the other races the finger), despite our toughness, we STILL wear armor. Orks aren't as tough as us, and you're lucky to find one wearing SLEEVES, much less armor.
2 )Power Armor - The envy of all other troops. How many other armies, after a direct hit from ordinance, has guys that look at each other and say " Hey, did you hear something?". Awesome. Already awesomely tough, we get the benefit of a save that works 66% of the time. That's like taking a bank safe and encasing it in titanium, just for fun!
3 )Religious Zealots - Man, these guys are nuts about killing. They eat, breathe, and live combat. Heck, I'm sure they have some way to defecate enemies to death. If rattled, they ALWAYS rally. And best yet (with 4th ed) NO FALLING VICTIM FOR SWEEPING ADVANCE! That just rules.
4 )The holy bolter - If you want someone to die, you shoot them. But if you absolutely, positively have to kill every mother f$%!@$ in the room, you use a bolter. Not much can stand up to a rocket-propelled explosive and walk away. AND THAT"S OUR WEAKEST GUN!
5 )GW LOVES us! - It says something that everytime a new army or race gets add-ons, we get something shortly thereafter to counter it. New Tyranid codex? We get UM Tyrannic War vets and BT's. New Orks? Probably we'll get more Deathwatch. Other races get new models every 3 years, we get new models every 3 months. All the better to kill you with, my dear. Heck, the necrons only have 3 DIFFERENT MODELS (I would say 4, but since EVERY necron player takes a Nightbringer, you really only have 3 choices  ).
6 )Lots of people try us - Chalk up one in the "assist" category to eBay. Because SM are so prolific in the GW literature, new gamers buy lots and lots of SM. Many do this without realizing the time commitment needed to put together an army. So what you get is a guy who buys a whole Battleforce thinking "This will be so cool". Then, after about 12 hours spent putting together his first model, half of which was spent trying to unglue his fingers, he decides that maybe, just maybe, he got a little carried away. So he sells the other 100 guys he already bought on eBay. With a starting bid of $1. So if you are committed, it's quite possible to pick up an entire army of new miniatures at roughly 50%. EBay is like our "secret stash"
7 )Speed painting - Sure, many gamers (such as myself) spend lots of time painting our SM's to a high level. Yet it is entirely possible to paint an army in a day. Why? HARDLY ANY FLESH TO PAINT. You need 3 colors, and you're basecoat can almost always come from a can. Heck, you could pick up a can of Krylon to spray your SM if you wanted. Black Templars just need 2 cans to field an army ( black for the body, white for the shoulderpads, glue together and viola! Instant violence!).
8 )Tactically forgiving - What do you get when you combine our toughness with our power armor? An idiot-proof army. To truly get your butt kicked, you have to be playing against some 40K grandmaster, the Deep Blue computer, or blindfolded and trapped under some kind of furniture. It is so easy to play SM, that even if you let a chicken loose on the table and moved your troops wherever he kicked them to, you'd STILL manage a draw.
9 )Drop Pods - Don't like trudging across the board? Don't worry, you can just drop them into the enemy lines on turn 2. And unlike teleporting, if you land on something, you just move the pod until you're OK. Then it's time for the ol' FACE FULL OF BOLTERS.
10 )A little bit of everything - SM really do have strengths in each category ( HQ, Elites, Troops, Fast Attack, Heavy Support).More than that, we have MULTIPLE choices in each. We don't just have 1 or 2, but usually about 4! So there is a TON of variety in our makeups. If you include chapter- specific stuff, there are literally HUNDREDS of unique armies that you can play, all with the same miniatures.
That's not all, but I'm starting to wind down. What else you got?
Marion: You're not the man I knew ten years ago.
Indiana: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.
For the last time, there are
NO FEMALE SPACE MARINES!!!!!
One of the things that drew me to Space Marines, other than what you've already mentioned, is the looks. They actually look like a bunch of futuristic bad mofos with big guns, nasty tanks, and a hunger for the flesh of innocents. The Tau and Eldar are the only other armies that really capture the whole 'We're really in the future, children.' feel while keeping nice clean lines. Chaos is too damn knobbly. IG makes me feel like I may as well be playing a WWII game, with considerably cheaper models. Orks, well, I like Orks but that's just because the little green guys are just so gosh darn cute.
Lots of people play Space Marines. I enjoy being different and what not, but it's also nice to have a sizable community that plays the same thing you do.
The Traits system is fantastic, plus we have 4 (or more?) special chapters to choose from. If you get tired of your current army... it's easy enough to switch to something new without having to buy a single new model. Sure playing Blood Angels with your Black Templar models might look a little funny, but you can try out an entirely new army with only a very little bit of extra money and painting. Trait armies are even better, especially if you came up with your own color scheme. The Emperor's Pointy Sticks can be whatever damn list you want them to be. This isn't unique to Space Marines, but I think we have the widest variety. (Eldar, CSM, and IG are pretty good at this too I think.)
I like that there's a variety of viable play-styles with the SM as well. You can have a shooty army. You can have an assault army. You can go crazy with the bikes and speeders and play Ravenwing. All terminators. Lots of dreadnaughts. The trait system can let you customize your army to taste. Wanna try something different? Change your traits, buy some new models/vehicles/whatever. Voila, your army is completely different.
The only thing I bemoan is our lack of a variety of decent armored vehicles, an "armored cav" style army is not so good.
Ah well, the whole point of the space marines is that it's based around the basic marine, who's just an all-around BA.
I like them because they fit my way of fighting
I dont like to commandeer lots of men, i always forget about some and they all trip over each other, i much rather to command a smaller group of people who have the same amount of power
so i pick the astartes DUH

I love the way Space Marines play but the main factor i love about Marines is that our models looks so awesome! I love the looks and the design of the marine models.
And you can convert them to make them look even cooleR!
Marines are the best!!!
There is one thing that has kept me in the Marines and never any other army I have tryed and that is the Vindicator and the Terminators
1) the vindicator fires a piesized plate at the enemy that is strength 10 and AP2 so nothing is getting an armour save no matter how much he whines, second that gun what is cooler than a tank with a barrol on it that looks like it can through a dustbin at you.
2) terminators have got to be the one of the hardest units in the game and they are even copyed by our foe (nobs in mega armour?) and the lightning claws terminator hounours means 3 attacks (4 charging) that reroll to wound put a chaplian with that and you enemy is going to get his entire lower body never mind his arse handed to him on a plater!
Yes people i know that my spelling and punctuation is awful but I am product of British teaching pollicies so what can I do about it?
why I love space marines?
Well, beacuse they know how to kick some serious ass!
And beacuse a marine can crush a human skull with his bare hand (watch out IG)
I too really like the look of the space marines. I really like the streamlined look of the beaky helmet. I think it adds a lot of character to the model. I am also pleased to see the spikey shoulderpad in the new boxed sets. Now if we can only get them to add a few of the older style armor in their kits and I would be very happy!

I love marines too (don't we all?) for a number of reasons:-
-Firstly i'm a sci-fi fan so the whole 'angels of death' in the far future is really cool.
-Secondly the models are really cool and really fit in with the fluff.
-Thirdly the rules are awesome ('and they shall know no fear' is THE best rule in the game no question)
marines are the beginner army...
anyone can play them, and usually play them respectably...
there's a reason they're always in the starter boxes...
you learn marines 'cause then you don't really have to learn anything other than the rules,
then you move on to something more challenging...

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
