Did you know that?
I didn't know that.
Do you belive that?
I didn't believe that either.
But after a long discussion with the Army Builder data file maintainers and a call to the Games Workshop rules folks I have learned that:
Because Logan Grimnar and Ragnar Blackmane do not have the IC rule specifically stated in their descriptions ( p27 & 28 in Wolf codex ) they are NOT Independant Characters !!!
Oh, and did you know that Logan And Ragnar CANNOT be accompanied by Fenrisian Wolves?
I sure didn't.
But, same story there. Wolves are not listed in their descriptions.
So, even tho Logan and Ragnar ARE Wolf Lords.
AND Wolf Lords are normally ICs
AND Wolf Lords can normally take Wolves.
Logan and Ragnar, the 2 greatest Wolf Lords of them all CANNOT !!! ( ( (
So what say the rest of the Wulfen Commander brethern?
Is this BS or what??

Fear the Wolf !!
lol....hmm this might be worth remembering.
"And now I'll fire my lascannon at Ragnar behind that squad"
"You can't target him until he's the closest model"
Sorry, Dark Angel player.
Bloody hell, just went and checked my codex, and lo and behold no independent character rule for either, ulrik had it just to Grimnar or Blackmane. Weird
Only a few prefer liberty - the majority seek nothing more than fair masters
Yea, and Ulrik gets wolves for cheap too.
Only 10pts each.
But no Wolves allowed for the famous Wolf Lords

"Ok, got my army on the board here and I'll take my first turn. First things first I'll roll last man standing for.... hrm.... well, looks like Logan has decided to leave early."
Seriously though, I don't really think this affects gameplay. I think you'd be hard pressed to find an opponent that would agree to let you play a special character then not have the sense to see these guys should have IC and play as such. For me, it's an obvious case of an oversight that will be corrected at the nearest availible opportunity.
That's a rather interesting ruling, however it seems to contradict itself for Ragnar because in the rules for Ragnar's Berserk Charge it states that the bonus also applies to any unit he joins as long as he is part of it. A conundrum to be sure.
I always assumed that they couldn't take wolves though.Actually units that start out with only a single model don't need to take all on their own checks."Ok, got my army on the board here and I'll take my first turn. First things first I'll roll last man standing for.... hrm.... well, looks like Logan has decided to leave early."

Rules for grenades are on page 72 of the rulebook.
The idea is that, they are such great ICs, that nothing but the finest warroirs will acompany them to battle, as it says they can have a wolf guard, body guard. Yes, this is an oversight by GW, since, if the wolf gaurd dies, but the charactor does not, he should revert back to an IC, and it is quiet frankly, they must be IC, BECAUSE, and this would be the Imporant Part, THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SINGLED OUT IN CC OTHERWISE. So you may take this a a bonus for now, or simply agree to use him as he should be used, as an IC. Peace
P.S. Rules boys and army builder are no authorety, neither know what they are talking about half the time.
meh, not being an IC and getting the bodyguard means their survival in close combat increases exceptionally...
since they can't be singled out, the enemy can't just ignore their guard and hammer away...

"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
I think you could probably get most people to go along with them being IC's. Or better yet...don't tell them their not. If your opponents happen to stumble on this then fine, otherwise they look like IC's to me. However if you intend to use the little bonus of not getting singled out I'd say you better let them know before han, so that your not being an ass.
I agree the IC status is not a big problem.
I can't imagine anyone arguing that these guys are not ICs.
It was more the AB guys attitude that got me riled on that point.
I am not sure playing Logan without IC status is a good idea tho.
I mean, he can probly hold his own in CC.
I would be more worried about my opponent picking him off with a high S low AP shot that could insta-kill.
But the wolves....
That's what really bugs me the most.
It's just so un-fluffy to not have a wolf or 2 running alongside these chracters.
And, doggone it, just about every pic in the codex shows them with wolves.
So, ya know what? I'm gonna play these guys as ICs WITH wolves.
And if anybody calls me on it I'll sic the wolves on 'em.
Or behead 'em with my Frost Axe
or or or Sumthin!
