Every time you see a forum discussing the pro's and cons of collecting warhammer 40k (as opposed to videogames etc), the most common con you will see (aside from the price $$) is the lack of available opponents. & it is very true. even if you are king popular with 1000 friends you still may not have one who plays warhammer.
My proposed solution to this common problem would be to start up some kind of 'battlenetwork' where players can register their army type and where they live etc and arrange to battle others in the same area. Perhaps to first meet at the local gamesworkshop for the first game (for safety reasons, i wouldnt want my idea to be the cause of some innocent 12 year old being lured to a paedophiles house thinking he was in for a friendly game of warhammer)
Particularly for people like myself who live in an area with no local Gamesworkshop to go to meet other gamers.
Would like to hear other peoples opinions etc about this problem & any potential solutions such as my suggestion. Or perhaps to inform about something similar that already exists.
(My apologies if this isnt posted in exactly the right area)
Warhammer 40k isnt as popular as good ol Warhammer, but if you thing finding other players is a rarity, think again. I know quite a few people who play 40k...
But still good idea. I live in Sparks, NV, 89431, and the hobby shop I go to is Hero's, Games, and Hobbies.
If anyone of yous is around that area, lets get a game goin!
(unfortunately ninja kinshu, i think you are on the other side of the planet lol im in australia!)
Excellent idea. Im in Aus 2, and no matter how hard i try, NONE of my mates even wanna touch the stuff. Im acculy a webdesinger and currently working on a rather large project that works much the same as you would lyk, but with gigs. It lists all bands gigs, dates, where they are how much etc. Once i have finsihed that, then im pretty sure i could manipualte it alittle to fit the purpose....cause one thing im lacking is opponents.
yeah, opponent finders are nice,
but organizing with them is the problem part...
personally, i've always debated taking my army with me on the road and just showing up at random GW stores to challenge locals.... (well, to get my arse handed to me by them, but that's another matter..)
but since the GW site isn't overly accurate on the gaming community...
it's a great idea...
IMO you could set it up easilly with a base PHP system (and connecting it to a forum would mean people could post battle reports, challenges and the like online...)
additionally, you should consider listing stuff like:
Location (down to local gaming store played at...)
W/L/D against other listed players for armies played...
Fluff/pics of personal army (prolly in profile info)...
for local game stores, when the open gaming and tourneys are (perhaps link to local game store websites if possible...)
Pictures of the Smigs Army for your amusement....
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women"
"JESUS SAVES! the rest of your models each take a wound."
Yeah it would all be run using php and is realtivly easy to set up. All the content would be user created, so it just be a matter of building it and letting it expand itself.
thanks for the feedback, definately like the sound of tweeking that site to fit our purposes. anyone is free to steal my idea and do so. i was really just throwing the idea up in the air and letting people run with it, & theres plenty of room to build on the basic idea as one of you suggested with the win/loss ratio's etc (good idea!). perhaps even register the players with proper battlefields at home as special members or something like that. Bcoz personally i prefer playing in the privacy of someones house or my own. rather than playing at a GW store with little 10 year olds yelling & screaming and trying to touch your precious well painted models with their grubby hands.( lol & even then only if your lucky enough to HAVE a local GW.
Perhaps if enough of us agree we could even 'rally' together and propose the idea to GamesWorkshop directly and see if they will run with the idea and do it themselves, bcoz like i said if the first meeting takes place at the local GW then they will definately have incentive to do it bcoz it will attract business, or atleast get them to post it as an article to let more people know
anyway keep the feedback coming

i checked out opponent search, perhaps the site might be ok in america or britain or wherever but its not much use to me as there arent many aussies registered there. only about 5 in my state & none of which in my town. so yeah..
I guess perhaps instead of creating a new one it owuld be easier to just make opponent search more widely known so that more people use it. otherwise its useless.
