Just wondering what people take for the core of there army. I was thinking about stating imperial guad and wanted to know what people take and why.
"you don't under stand, my empathy for you could fit in a match box, with the matches in it"
Exactly what do you mean when you say core?

The Ig are evidently based around infantry, since the typical force org chart has 1 HQ and 2 troop choices I say stick with the obvious for IG(or their version of the force org chart); buy 1 HQ squad, then about 2-3 infantry boxes, that's pretty much one whole platoon. 1HQ with an officer, master-vox and appropriate support with heavy weapons, and 4-6squads you have a pretty basic core. Next think on the company level; 2 platoons and an HQ platoon or section are realy needed. Look at some of the army lists in the "armylists" forum and see what others do. Say that your shooting for an effective all around army with no doctrines or extra gear, have the HQ platoon with HQ squad and heavy weapons teams, plus 2 platoons with 2 squads each. That is a fairly basic set-up. From there you can add the elites, fast attack or heavy support units. I would get a Leman Russ and a Basalisk myself. This set-up is extremely flexable and tournament worthy. In short. Core units=the platoon(HQsquad plus 2infantry squads); then buy tanks, you always need tanks. The theory of combined arms states "the armour protects the infantry, the infantry support the armour, the artillary covers the company, while the company supports the artillary." Meditate on this and see the light.
*Fart* "Keep talking sir, we'll find you!"
