Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey all, I'm new to this game, but I'm pretty certain I'm looking to play Daemonhunters as my army.. What do I need to get to start with?
I'm looking to start off by getting up to ~500 points worth of units, preferably stuff I'll definitely want to be using a lot. So.. where do I start? I assume filling out the basic Force Org. chart, 2 squads of GKs and some HQ, but.. Inquisitor Lord? GM? BC? what will be usefull to me to start off with, given that I'll only have so many points worth of troops anyhow?
Also - I'm definitely going puritan, cause, well, halberds. But should I go all GK to start with, or get some stormtroopies or IG vehicles or anything as well?
At the moment I'm just looking for the first 500 points or so, but recommendations beyond that would be fine too.
i'd say start off with some grey knights. two choices of grey knights and the termy unit. use that, and than for 750, add in storm troopers. from there, u should have a gneeral idea how u want to expand your army ('i like gks, so i'll expand them'. or 'they need some more support. shoot inq. and such for me)
"One thing that intrigues people to fantasy is how different it is from reality. Make sure you remember that difference, and you'll have a wonderful time."
Thanks.. more specifically, how many actual GK figures will I want? and how many GKTs? I'm guessing the 5-packs wont be enough to field a whole army if I just get 2 GKs and 1 GKT set.. and when/how many/of what should I go for for Dreads and transports and suchlike?
well if you are going to play 500 points that is 20 basic greyknights, however if you are not playing combat patrol rules you will need a termy as an HQ, and some stormtroopers (or a drednought) for vehicle hunting.
As for what to buy, I am not a proponent of special weapons in GK squads, so I would stay away from the box set, or just buy one, and then pick up some more GKs in blisters and another Justicar.
If you want to get a cheap HQ it will be about 75, a PAGK squad runs up to about 275, and then you can pick up a dred for 145, or some stormies with meltas in a rhino which totals to 190 if it is full...but I would start with those four buys--Probably BC stern (as HQ) a Justicar and 9 GKs (either 1 box and 2 blisters, or 5 blisters and the justicar), and then a rhino with stormies. The big problem with starting Daemonhunters is with so few points you cannot do much; your troops are expensive, and if you are not playing combat patrol you will likely spend more than 400 points on the two of them, leaving you with almost nothing for an HQ and heavy suport.
These guys seem to know what they are talking about. I have to go with them on this one. Try getting a BC (I'm not too fond of stern myself) and then get some PAGK. If you have points left, I would definitely go with a shooty Dread to back them up. I don't know what nichodemus is talking about with the blisters. I myself would go with two boxes of 5 GK and make two 5-man PAGK squads.
Good luck with your GKs. Also, if you want an idea of how to make your army really stand out, pass me a pm .

I am saying that when you just start playing you don't have enough GKs to make FAGKs, and (in america) you get a Justicar and 4 GK for the same $30 it costs to pick up the Justicar 3 GKs and an incinerator GK box set, which will only use four of the models because you shouldn't use Incincerators until you start using FAGKs, and by then you can buy another box set to get your special weapons for the $5 price reduction you get from the box set.
I am just saying that you wont feel like you are buying worthless models if you buy the blisters, but when you just start you never use the incinerator, and then you begin to loath the weapon, and model which you paid for...
A lot of it depends how much money you haveOriginally Posted by Miril
Basically, for a pure DH army, your core should consist of about 20 GK as stated earlier (you can buy them in packs of 5 for less). Also, you want to get GK's with Psycannons as they are the unique, powerful weapon of DH (if money is an issue, just proxy the Incinerator in the box pack as Psycannons).
Expanding, 1 box of GK Termies would be good. You can say the Brother-Capt (the one with the cloak between his legs) is the Grand Master HQ if you want.
Finally, I would invest in a couple Dreadnoughts. Although, not the best buy, it's the only heavy weapons platform that the DH have other than the Land Raider (Crusader). These though you can buy used from E-bay or something. Not worth retail IMO.
To expand your army though, Sisters of Battle (Witch Hunters) complement the DH quite well. MIght want to pick up that Codex and think about mixing and matching.
Alright, thanks all
As I posted a few weeks ago in the army list forum, I find that this 501 pt list works very well:
HQ : Brother-Captain, psycannon
Troops 1 : 8 ISTs, 2x plasma; Chimera w/multilaser and heavy bolter
Troops 2 : 7 Grey Knights + GK Justicar
You can exchange the psycannon on the BC for another GK (and an auspex on the BC) if you wish (new total of 497 pts). If you keep the psycannon and anyone quibbles about the one point over 500, you can drop one IST and add melta-bombs to the GK Justicar and auspex to the BC.
Some people prefer melta guns to plasma, and they can be switched in at the same points cost.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

BC Stern can only be used in 1500 + point list.
Although STs and Chimeras are an awsome combo, they just cost to much in a 500 point list. for the price of the tank you can take 8 more STs.
How about this list?
[HQ CHoice I] - 91
Join him to your GKs, and take on the infantry.
[Troops Choice I] - 225
8 Grey Kights
Upgrades; 1 Justicar
[Troops Choice II] - 90
Upgrades; Grenade Launcher x 1
[Troops Choice III] - 90
Upgrades; Plasma Gun x 1
With more troops you can kinda overwhelm the oppoent.
