I Need a bit Help of Understand some of the Assault Marines wargear and what i should put on them. Now i know what to do, i'm fielding a Blood Angels army, and i just bought the new rules books for SM, (wow so long me = idiot) and i just peered into the ASM set and saw the shield. Now i'm wondering what the hell is that, no weapon behind it is it a combat shield? so thats one thing i need to know what the hell is the shield there for with no weapon...??
Well next question is hmm, would i benefit from the shield or not, cuz i'm planning of placing a plasma pistol sergeant with (needing help to decide) either a power weapon or power fist on him. As usual my tactic using it of course as the Fast Anti Tank killers with the melta bombs etc etc, what would benfit better having the combat shield with Plasma, Shield and (i dunno what to pick Power sword/weapon or fist) or Plasma and power weapon/fist/sword...
Help would benefit here thanks...
It can be either a combat shield or a storm shield (just make sure that you tell your opponent and use the correct points value/weapon restrictions).
I strongly suggest using a power fist or thunder hammer (if you don't mind the cost of the hammer) rather than a power weapon, especially if you expect the squad to be taking out vehicles. I wouldn't take the plasma pistol on an AM Sergeant, as you can already take two in the squad and it is very (very very) annoying to lose a tooled up sergeant through bad luck (or statistics, he will die about once every EDIT: Oops, screwed up the fraction. Its 5%).
I always take one or the other (storm or combat) for my AM Sergeants, as it will keep him alive against those opponents which can make a mess of the rest of the squad for that extra turn or two.
It also seem you are asking why is the shield there with no weapon. This is because the AM arms already have a weapon on them and the shield is wrist/forearm mounted.

Statistically he will die once in every 18 shots, assuming only one shot fired(as it should be), he will overheat on a one, and then fail his save on that one a 3rd of the time.he will die about once every 10 single shots).
Him dieing once every 3 games for the added effect of an extra plasma pistol ain't bad.

Actually, this brings up an interesting point. Every model in an Assault Squad is BS 4, including your favorite hidden power fist. Place a plasma pistol in his hands, and you can roll for all three plasma pistoliers at once! On the off chance one overheats and the armor save is failed, you can simply remove an ordinary plasma pistol-wielder.
To actually contribute something useful to the topic, I say go with a plasma pistol and power fist/thunder hammer (your choice on the latter), possibly a combat shield. He'll already have melta bombs, but you can still choose to swing that massive weapon and inflict some real hurt on a tank. Besides, who can say no to three plasma shots coming before twenty-seven S5 I5 attacks on the charge followed up with four S9 power fist/thunder hammer attacks? Only those on the recieving end of them, and by then it's too late.
The best way to equip a assault squad is the following:
veteran serg w/powerfist
2 plasma pistols
Assault squads are so vicious especially when the serg has a powerfist.Seeing you are Blood Angels you don't reeally need to have a powerfist but i always like to take the power fist so that the squad packs a really hard punch and can take on anything that crosses its path.
A combat is a handy thing to have and will add abit of survivability to your veteran serg.It grants him a 5+ invulnerable save. And its only 5 points so its pretty cool.
I dont really like to give my serg a plasma pistol incase he overheats, which can happen and i sure dont want it to happen.I find that 2 plasma pistols from the other marines is plenty.
I'm assuming you are talking about the assault marine boxed set...Originally Posted by Sorrowsky
That IS a combat shield, meant for the SGT's left arm. And it DOES come with a weapon, a bolt pistol which he holds behind the shield. Put a powerfist on the right arm, and voila! you have a Vet SGT with Combat Shield, a bolt pistol, and a powerfist.
I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for giving me the advice, it actually led me now into a path i can follow and use to benefit for my army But to Belial, if you look behind the shield his hand is holding it, which is the point what got me so confused... but anyway, you as well showed me something i should have done, conversion.. lol
I think you would have to roll for the sergeant seperately: the model with the overheating plasma weapon must make the save!Originally Posted by Archetype

Thats ok Sorrowsky anytime! Glad we could help you out.Originally Posted by Sorrowsky
Oh and on the combat sheild,he isnt holding anything behind it,just his bare fist.
So...it's a storm shield, no? Which are one of the most pointless bits of wargear available - no extra attack, reducing the effectiveness of your powerfist.Originally Posted by Tycho
