With the Dark Crusade looming my Guard regiment has been called to aid in the defense of an imperial system against the coward Xenos species the Tau. In preperation adeptus mechanus is fitting all my tanks with heavy bolters, the men are putting down there plasma guns and picking up the grenade launchers, and the seargeants are sharppening their chainswords hoping to lubricate it with the blue blood of the Xeno. So my question is what are some good tactics against Tau? I rarely fight them, due to clashes with the Eldar in my current system, though we've met in the occasional skirmish which has gone either way. My current plan is to get into close combat with them, requsition more drop troops from nearby systems, and train more of my army in infiltration. Also I will use the barely tolerated Mutant Ratlings, I've found their aim to take care of problems numerous times, plus they could get a shot on the Ethreal. So Commanders of the Imperium what say you on fighting the Tau?
Personally I don't like charging my guard toward Tau or deep striking near them because pulse rifle fire can be devastating to a unit of IG especially if they are rapid firing. If I know I’m playing Tau I usually bring 2 basilisks with indirect fire and put them on each corner of the long board edge. This leave a very small blind spot mostly in your deployment zone that at least one of the bassies can’t hit. I’ll also take a Leman Russ and at least I hellhound. Also, against Tau I stock up on mortars and use a unit of ratlings. Basically I stock up on anything that can shoot without line of sight or can stay out of range of a pulse rifle.
"Official! The graves of warriors who have given thier lives for the Emperor now outnumber the stars themselves."
I have played many a game against the Tau, and they can be REAL annoying... they're arguably the only race that could possibly out-shoot the Guard.
That having been said, don't rush at them! If you want to set up some advance hardened veterans squads using their infiltration go for it, but don't push up with your army; that'll just lose you precious turns of firing with your heavy weapons.
Hellhounds are awesome against the tau, as are bassies. LRs are iffy because they're targets when they're out in the open.
Heavy Bolters and Autocannons are great against Tau, but I'd suggest the Autocannon for the added Str and range. Don't forget that the range on their weapons is 30" compared to our lasguns, and their weapons will actually hurt.
Beware their Kroot, as they'll use them in much the same way as we use Conscripts.
Target priority should be broadsides suits, leader, crisis suits, stealth suits... take a couple shots at his vehicles when the opportunity presents itself, as well.
The only way you're going to be able to hit his battlesuits are with indirect fire weapons, or by somehow surviving until you get close enough to assault them. I'd go with Rough Riders over Ratlings... the riders can maneuver into a position where they'll be able to rush the suits and the lances will make sure they get taken out.
Sentinels make great decoys... throw a lascannon on them... it's an annoyance they can't afford to ignore!
The mistake not to make against Tau is over-reliance on Leman Russes. Any Tau player worth his salt will be able to pop them quite easily. A Basilisk is good, but know that the Tau player WILL be coming for it....watch out for Deep Striking Crisis suits. Even better prepare an ambush for them, a unit of veterans with some plasma should be able to really hurt whatever he drops to take out your indirect fire. Oh and my suggested first target for a Basilisk - hit his Stealthsuits. You will have to roll an extra die to determine scatter, but this is one of the more effective ways to dealing with them. Otherwise they can be an annoying nuisanse.
I recommend you go 'back to basics'. Stock your infantry up with Heavy Bolters and Lascannons and go for a straight shooting match with him. Trying to close could be a bad idea, you aren't really that much better an close combat as them, and when they rapid fire you entire squads will vanish.
Unfortuantly Apetus Mechanus has denied my requstion for artillery (I dont have any basilisk modes... yet So my plan is to create a light infantry army, infilitrate by his door step, behind cover so as to block line a sight, making him come to me, than keep alot of my army on the other side of the board and just pound the snot out of the Xeno with mortars and las cannons. I am going to field two leman russ to act as a firing magnet. Then teach them the meaning of the word charge.
In an Imperium of a million worlds, what is the death of one world in the cause of purity?

Every played against an all infantry, all sonic Emperor's Children army? Simply put, Sonic blasters Assault 2/Heavy 3 bolters. It's like a stormbolter that can get an extra shot when standing still... on every single marine not armed with a heavy or special weapon. The ammount of fire they can put out is simply ridicilous. My all infantry, cameleolined guardsmen where simply washed away by that.Originally Posted by kidsyndrome

Ive played against tau many a time with my guard and havent lost a match against them yet. The best tactic i find is to stay between 30" and 36" with your squads armed with only heavy bolters. This way u can get him but his pulse rifles are useless unless he moves closer. Hellhouds are also really useful and arent that expensive points wise. Equip all of you vehicles with searchlights, it makes it alot easier to shoot those annoying stealth suits. Lascannon or missile launcher squads for shooting battlesuits should be kept in cover at the back maybe hidden behind some other guys to increase thier survivability.
I would recommend against charging forward, if u focus on shooting you will force him into a battle of attrition that will be very hard for him to win due to the amount of guys u have.
Hope this helps,
I would either be outside of 30 or get to 24. Also autocannons are nice due to range of 48.
Against tau I would take carapace armor.Yes, cost alot but worth the 4 save against pusle rifles. I like to take mortars and basilsik for the indirect fire. Kroot in the open will died fast. They have only 24 range if they do not move. So make them come to you . Protect your baslisk from DS crisis suits with some units near it. Stay away from rapid fire firewarriors it will get ugly. You need LC to hurt his hammerheads. They have front 13. As long as you can shake them every turn you will be ok. Your tanks will not last long with tau.Str 10 railgun just hurts leman russes. Also if he is mobile tau then he will load up 12 firewarriors in his devilfish and drop them on top of you and rapid fire 24 str5 shoots (ouch). So take them out early. I hope that helps.
as a tau player.
becareful of the railheads, i wiped out my guard friend with a few shots of these(submunition round really really hurt guard)
be prepared for a highly mobile army. unitis(stealth/crisis) will move from behind cover, shoot, then in the assault phase jump back behind cover.
look out for the fish o furry tactic.
becareful of 12 Firewarriors popping out of a fish right next to you and taking 24(48 if 2 fish) s5 ap5 shots at you.
I completely decimated my friend's Tau in like 2 turns. Against firewarriors just have loads of heavy bolters. They mow them down like friggin'.. I don't know.. corn. Against broadsides just deepstrike a group of veterans next to them and hit them with meltaguns (instakill broadsides). Against suits?.. Well.. I just kind of try and not get stuck in the position of them running out of cover, shooting, and running back. I shoot them with lascannons before they get to cover. Against hammerheads I imagine the same meltagun tactic would work. Heck, even 3 rapid firing plasma guns will probably take one down. Tau cannot outshoot the Guard.
